I am searching for some pastoral prog albums for my collection. I need something pastoral, vivid lyricism, enthralling and enchanting. However, Pastoral Prog
does not mean Prog Folk.
What I have:
Jethro Tull (I am Tulled out, have almost everything by them)
Gryphon
Strawbs
Trees
Forest
Quicksand
High Tide
Mostly Autumn
Comus
Ragnarok
Curved Air
BJH
Hoelderlin
What I am looking For:
Lush Melodies reminiscent of "Moths" and "Acres Wild" by Jethro Tull
I want to steer clear of Iona, Book of Kells put me to sleep.
Carol of Harvest perhaps?
I dont know.
Recs?

try the second mp3 sample from Phoenix's homepage on the PA: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1586
(artist-Phoenix, album-Mugur de Fluier (Seeds of Pipe), year-1974, title-Strunga (The Canyon)) i think you can't get more pastoral than this - |

Try Steve Hackett's debut solo album Voyage of the Acolyte. There are some more rocking out moments but overall is pretty lush and pastoral. |

I'll second that, add their first album Ignis Fatuus to that as well. |

If you stand also bit cheesy aspects, try TUDOR LODGE's sole album. Maybe too Disney for my taste, but wonderfully coherent album still!
From the folk prog section MIDWINTER's record is a nice collectible for the fans of middle age orientation.

I am sure you haven't forgotten a classic album by a classic band, and a very pastoral one at that - Genesis - Trespass. Superb lyrics, wonderful 12 string guitars, strong melodies, biting vocals and nice piano and organ. Ok, The Knife is more of a rocker, but the album overall belongs in the same category as Voyage Of The Acolyte.
But I am biased, being a big Genesis fan!
Also, you would possibly like Submarine - Silence. An instrumental album in early Genesis vein by a good Italian group.
Nice keyboards and guitar work, a fluent work that flows nicely and never becomes too heavy.
And have you ever heard Aufklarung - De La Tempesta...L'Oscuro Piacere? Another Italian band this. The album has lyrics, sung in English, but the overall feel is gentle and subtle, with especially nice guitar work from two guitarists.
There is a track called (Silence In The Darkness) which is keyboard led, and is quite exquisite, very moving in fact.
And...of course, another classic, maybe the most pastoral of all, the debut album by Anthony Phillips - The Geese And The Ghost.
Ok, it is more baroque in nature in parts, but it is a wonderful piece of restrained beauty. Almost basic in appeal, it has wonderful 12 string guitars again, and the gentlest of melodies for the most part.
The piano work is lovely too.
Hope these suggestions are helpful to you.

Pentangle: Four first
Celeste: Principe Di Giorno Trader Horne: Same Le Orme: Collage Extradition: Hush Cressida: Asylum (and debut) Campo de Marte: Same Novalis: Same and Sommerabend Tonton Macoute: Same Try Emtidi instead of Carol of Harvest. Spirogyra' first and third album is quite similar to Comus, but less extreme. Camel? |

Cressida and Tonton macoute are not pastoral, but precious IMO.
Pastoral: Yatha sidra/A meditation mass: simple prog leaded by flute. |

Well, Tonton macoute has a slight pastoral feel thanks to the flute. BTW, i think that's a special flute timbrel that makes the pastoral sound. |

I second Roctopus's vote for CELESTE's "Principe Di Un Giorno".
(The album is actually called "Principe Di Un Giorno" (the back cover of the CD and the CD itself give 'Principe Di Giorno' as the name of the first track, but the notes inside the CD cover correctly name the album and first track as "Principe Di Un Giorno"). Another Italian album that I would recommend is FLOATING STATE's 2003 CD "Thirteen Tolls At Noon". To see if it is what you are looking for, you can listen to one of the tracks on the album's page in Prog Archives: Thirteen Tolls At Noon |
