i agree with you but this song was not listed! .......but it should have been there
.......would have made a strong contender to win this poll for sure! w |
If it's not listed, then I won't render a vote. As much as I like Collins-era Genesis, that song is just heinous. I think that, "Jesus Knows Me", and "Whodunnit" are the only Genesis tunes that I'll actually skip when listening to the discs. E

To me, 'Your own special way' is a harbinger of the greatest sellout in the history of the universe.

I don't get this hatred of pop songs for their own sake. However, I reserve a special place of distaste for 'Illegal Alien.' Racist and in such poor taste, the track makes me cringe. The music is poor too. It's the only GENESIS track I'll skip.

I don't know all of their newer stuff (don't know the last six songs listed), but I honestly can't think of any Genesis track that I strongly dislike -- let alone "hate."
(You see, I think that when they wrote pop songs, they were mostly rather good pop songs -- though some were just "okay.")
Even at their "worst," they're still better than most of what I hear on the radio these days!

Musically: The Way Of The World, because it's much too mediocre for Genesis. Mediocrity and Genesis? Never the twain should meet.
As it comes to lyrics: I Can't Dance.
(BTW, one of the worst lyrical lines: "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, we're gonna make it right".)

the one that i actively hate is not on your list. it has to be “throwing it all up, errrrr, away“, esp. with that annoying sing-along routine that phil always does live... out of your entertaining yet a tad useless list i would vote for “the way of the world“ – among the others are some very fine and timeless pop songs with sometimes more than a progressive twist.

I don't like some of what they did after Hackett left (I think he affected the band more than Gabriel when he left) but they did some good pop stuff amongst the dung.
For me, More Fool Me has to get the vote because it sticks out like a sore willy on the Selling England album. Wrong singer, wrong atmosphere, wrong subject matter. Foul.

Invisible Touch .Horrible pop drivel that hasn't improved with age (some pop does).
Who Dunnit? actually makes me laugh. It was obviously intended as a joke

I equate it to modes of locomotion. Once you learn to walk, you rarely go back to crawling. Unless you need to get into some tight area where you can't really stand to do some job that requires the crawl function. Pop songs are like crawling, prog is lke walking. Once you have discovered prog or jazz or some other thoughtful music you only need pop for the odd job like dancing with a hot chick or something. Otherwise, what the hell's the point?

The two worst Genesis songs are not in the list (i.e. *ll*g*l *l**n and * c*n't d*nc*), so I went with the monumentally insipid In Too Deep. This one takes the cake just before Whodunnit, which has a kind of fun in it, it just lasts a bit too long (can you imagine, three entire minutes of fun?).
Harbinger or not, I think Your Own Special Way is a beautiful song and I'm a bit sad it's on this list and even more sad that it's 4th position in the number of votes now. Wot Gorilla is excellent as well. Some other songs are likable as well (Me And Sarah Jane, That's All and of course the three Calling All Stations songs (especially Not About Us)).

I'm sorry, but 'Who Dunnit?' is an offence to the sensibilites...and for me, 'wins' (or is that 'loses'?) by a country mile....

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Mama is the only Genesis song I'll turn off if it comes on the radio. I can't stand the "ha ha heh heh" part.

Three Sides Live and the first album are both shockingly underrepresented in this poll. And surely Harlequin deserved a mention.
