Don's last album was released in 1982, yet people still regularly mention and discuss him. Don't worry guys, his legacy isn't going anywhere. He'll rightly be remembered for decades to come. RIP Don.

I forget just how unfathomably creative this man was until I listen sometimes. It's just hard to believe.

Ain't that the case. I've listened to much of his music last night that I haven't heard in a while (particularly some more obscure Trout Mask tracks) and I'm still in awe, 40 years down the road.

My spirit's made up of the ocean
And the sky 'n' the sun 'n' the moon
'n' all my eyes can see
I cannot go back to your land of gloom
Where black jagged shadows
Remind me of the coming of your doom
I want my own land
Take my hand and come with me

I was left shocked and numb when I heard. I had just listened to Mirror Man, Clear Spot, and Safe as Milk the day before. We were all fortunate to walk the earth at the same time as an eternal artist such as he.

Hi,
Warning: Headitorial/Soapbox Moment!
A lot of us here, have said some nice things about this ... and even from an outsider this is massively appreciated.
However, it is really strange to me to see some people say nice things, and I am not sure everyone knows, sees or understands, what it takes to be an original, and one that stood up for his music and eventually quit the music business because ...
The late 60's and then the 70's had a massive number of folks that were highly expressive, original, and ... sometimes the best description was ... off the wall!
It was a time that allowed people to experiment, to learn, and look for new things, unlike today, when even in a board like this one, there are so many that love to trash threads with trolling comments, and making comments that are NOT on par with the "experimenting" of that time, not to mention critical analysis of the work at hand today, and dismiss the good work, and good intent, of many of those people in the arts and some revellers that also appreciate the work.
So, if I may ask, when you take your hat off, for a Frank Zappa, or a Captain Beefheart ... please ... remember what the art and the artist's work stood for ... and how that is so missed today -- and not appreciated in this board ... by folks that continuously compare everything done today to how it was done yesterday ... 40 years ago or so ... and remember one very important thing ... music can't expand and go further, without those kind of people ... in the end it's not just about the notes, or another screaming voice, or screaming guitar ... it's about the artist ... that left an indelible stamp on us all ... because it was art ... not just music.
It's hard, at this moment, not to agree with Walter when he says music died in 1989 ... it doesn't give a Djam Karet and many other bands the dues they deserve, even today, but ... he has a massively important point to make and show ... that this commercially minded thing today needs to get broken apart, or this generation will go down in history as boring and non-existant.
I can tell you that my generation is well represented and remembered! You talk about them all the time in this board ... and though I feel, sometimes, that you are not totally correct, in the end, that's not a criticism ... you will know about this when you become an artist, and are fighting like heck for your work ... and hopefully never reach that day where you quit ... you don't need it anymore ... and we lose another voice! Yours!
Just remember that when you take your hat of to Don, one more time!
That kind of indomitable spirt is needed really bad these days in all the arts! And it would be nice to see it more in a place like this one.
/Soapbox Moment Over
RIP Don, and yes, you will be missed.

People like the great Captain simply don't exist in music anymore. A true, genuine artist.
