CDs today OOIOO - Kila Kila Kila (cool Boredoms spinoff band) Firesign Theatre - I Think We're All Bozos on this Bus (have LP but it's old) Depeche Mode - Black Celebration Pavement - Terror Twilight (I've been holding off buying this for years, anticipating the imminent release of the 2 CD deluxe version, as has happened for the rest of their albums. It's apparently in the can, but it's been 3 years now with no release date in sight, so I caved and bought the single).

Never thought I'd see the day that I was actually considering not purchasing a VDGG CD, but here it is. Went back to Wayside for The Muffins and went ahead and picked up Unit Wail, as well as the Present first two albums. |

The few tracks I heard on youtube I liked alot...esp compared to the last two studio albums. Though the production was rather weird. I hope it's just youtube (thought I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't...) And that's an excellent order! Sorry I never got back to you about Unit Wail...I haven't listened to it yet...

Trisector was definitely a disappointment, but I thought Grounding In Numbers was actually pretty decent. Not Godbluff or Still Life for sure, but not too bad and a definite improvement over Trisector. But I've always associated VDGG with Hammill's lyrics and vocals, and secondarily with Jaxon's saxophone. With none of those three things present I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy it, but maybe it would be worth checking out a couple of Youtube vids. S'ok. I know it sometimes takes me awhile to listen to new items in my catalog. I haven't listened to any of my last purchases yet, although I probably will over the weekend. Heard some other good things about the Unit Wail though, so went ahead and got it. |

It's probably worth it to sample it. Worst thing that can happen is you waste 10 mins of your time. And idk...Trisector grew on me after some time, but still...there are some songs on there I don't care for. As for AGIN...it just falls flat for me. I almost want to say watered down. I've read that some people thought it had more 'balls' than recent VDGG and frankly to me it's the opposite. And that is a problem I have in spades.

I have recently bought a number of 'The Divine Comedy' albums. (Casanova, A Short Album about Love, Regeneration and Absent Friends). Neil Hannon is a great lyricist who uses many witty literary references. The music swings between Scott Walker (pre-Tilt) epic romanticism, indie guitar pop, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band-style absurdity and singer songwriter troubadourism. Hannon often adopts a professorial, arch persona (some might say smug) to satirise aspects of relationships and modern society, and deliver a wealth of clever observations and ironies. I have thoroughly enjoyed the albums so far and intend to get a few more with my next Amazon order.

And that was not what I was expecting at all. Have to sample a bit more of it, but I was expecting the 2nd CD of Present without David Jackson. And even with Jaxon, that CD was dull. From the couple of pieces I heard Dronus and Tuesday, the Riff, it sounds more experimental than the unnecessary noodling of Present. This sounds more like the guys have been listening to a lot of dark chamber prog. Like I said, will have to sample some more to make a final decision on whether to purchase or not, but taken on its own merits and not as a VDGG album, it looks more promising than I originally thought. |
