I frequently visit Metal-Archives for the work of several eminent reviewers: Abominatrix, ANationalAcrobat, Cheeses_Priced, droneriot, iamntbatman and especially NausikaDalazBlindaz. She writes very frequently, reviews often obscure and unusual records in a very lengthy and in-depth manner even if her writing can be a bit on the stuffy academic side.
Which reminds me that I've recently become quite fond of the webzine Black Ivory Tower, whose editor used to write for M-A as "Panflute" but stopped writing once his reviews became too long for the site. Their hallmark is exhausting analysis of mostly obscure black metal and (occasionally) neofolk, from the angle of how the music fits into a greater cultural and historical context. A similar site to BIT is Heathen Harvest, who display the same ethos but are way more professional a publication that's been around for much longer. They're also an industrial/noise and neofolk webzine that occasionally dips into metal rather than the other way around, so it's been pretty useful when I need to expand my horizons. Though he no longer updates, I am also a huge fan of Mark Prindle. He wrote often humourous and sometimes insightful reviews of artists' entire discographies in many different genres. His main metier was 1980s indie rock, punk and noise-rock though... to the point he's like a walking encyclopedia of those genres. Certain people here might not like his opinions on jazz, however! ![]() For other genres than avant/prog/psych and those described by the above mentioned websites, I use AllMusicGuide and RateYourMusic. Their lack of genre specialization save for certain users on the latter site I find something of a liability, however. Edited by Toaster Mantis - September 01 2013 at 03:06 |

Out of curiosity, what are your favourite reviewers on RYM? Mine are Cinematery, Darth_Toxic, MarsHottentot, Mister_Blonde, Noontide, Timmay, Tropylium, TheTrueMithrandir, Turkey_Beard and Warthur. I quite liked GrindcoreKaraoke's reviewing tenure too, but for some reason his forum activities consisted mostly of obvious trolling that couldn't be in further contrast with his reviews and it resulted in him not just getting banned but his reviews being deleted too.

No specific websites as far as new/not heard before albums go. I read more reviews of classics to see how different reviewers approach it and bring out is special qualities or offer dissenting views to criticise it. But for new albums, I just browse these forums and the interwebs in general to collect opinions. I then decide to check out an album. This might mean I don't really end up going for a really obscure album as I don't rely on a single reviewer's opinions. But that is ok for me because if I really like an album, I am going to listen to it over and over and over. A handful of such in a year and revisiting old favourites is enough to occupy my leisure time as it is.

I frequent RYM, Julian Cope's Head Heritage, Allmusic, JMA and recently I've watched a few YouTube reviews with that guy from the needledrop whatshisname (He did one on Scott Walker's Bisch Bosch which I thought was pretty cool). Anyway, I tend to stick with PA most of the time. Some terrific writers up in this mo'.

Hi,
NONE!
Not even PA!
Though I do accept suggestions to listen to things, but I will not read any reviews as they interfere with my own appreciation. AFTER the listen, I might check out some reviews, but not before ... EVER!
There are some folks here on PA that I trust and their music knowledge is too good to not appreciate a suggestion and where it came from! But it does not, in any way, say that I will go listen to things just because they said it, just like they would not either just because I said it.
You have to have a clear mindset, if you are going to learn something about "progressive" music ... if you don't ... you are only looking for a detail or a title of some sort, and you are not even into music!

Allmusic quite often, especially for non-prog.
Sometimes TalkClassical for classical music.

The mysterious Dutchman who runs the Black Ivory Tower metal webzine really really hates that Needledrop guy. To the point that he's got an Anti-Tony Fantano banner on his Welcome Page (modelled on the legendary black metal record label Deathlike Silence Productions' anti-Scott Burns banner) and called Fantano a "deluded nerd" in his review for Peste Noire's second LP. |

Anthony Fantano is a huge dork but I generally like watching his reviews. Cal is cool though. |

Anthony Fantano is the name! Yeah rings a bell. Tbh, I only watched a few of his reviews after that Bisch Bosch one he did, which I found rather entertaining. Dork? Maybe, but I gather most of the real music fans out there fall under that exact same description...
Gotta say, I stopped following the Black Metal scene some 10 years ago, so I wouldn't know about the current trend of haters out there. I would imagine that crowd, if they're anything like the previous that is, would turn their noses down a guy like Fantano for openly admitting to enjoying music with more than 3 chords involved. The only "Black Metal" act I follow these days plays a dark and industrialized form of noise Krautrock. They're French and called Aluk Todolo. Pretty good if you're looking for a way to scare the living daylights out of your neighbours.

By the way, I forgot to mention that I'm somewhat surprised by the many mentions of AllMusic. Their generalist approach means they can't go in as much depth as a genre-specialist site like this one. It's two very different ways to go about reviewing.
Their "Related Artists" tab is rather useful for seeing who's influenced who when you're too lazy to look up artist interviews however. (which I am often! ![]() |

IF ... and this is a big IF ... you ever wanted to become one of the musicians ... and 40 years later people are remembering your music ... what do you think you have to do and would like to learn from?
Checking out the DIFFERENT things many of these bands did, would help ... and how no one else was doing it ... and that means ... you have to learn to check yourself and yourself and yourself ...
Or as David Ossman of the Firesign Theater said once ... I know who I have to know ... ME!
And then you have to decide!
Good luck!

I check these music websites nearly every day (and usually in this order): Pitchfork: http://pitchfork.com/ Resident Advisor: http://www.residentadvisor.net/ ----- this one's an electronic music site The Quietus: http://thequietus.com/ Pop Matters: http://www.popmatters.com/ Consequence of Sound: http://consequenceofsound.net/ Tiny Mix Tapes: http://www.tinymixtapes.com/ ------ although the site's become quite boring lately... Stereogum: http://www.stereogum.com/ ---- which today has a leaked mp3 of the new James Murphy-produced Arcade Fire single! Plus I check other sites fairly often: The Wire (http://www.thewire.co.uk/), Guardian's culture page (which includes music, tv and film, books: http://www.theguardian.com/culture). Probably more I should be looking at...
