Kogaion was a Romanian Symphonic Rock band founded in1993.
Marius Baras - keyboards, vocals Vasile Calin Filip - guitars, blockflotte Mihail Comisaru - bass Metin Osman - drums, percussions They were active on the underground scene and released a self titled album in 1999. The album represents a selection from their much longer stage show called “The Castle” which unfortunately was never recorded entirely because no producer was interested in this kind of music. Kogaion’s album was self produced by the band. The album is long out of print but the tracks can be heard on SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/mariusbaras2013/sets/kogaion Quote from Marius Baras (Kogaion leader): "When we had our debut (October 1993) I was intrigued and almost amused. Suddenly a lot of people began to say that we had a lot of resemblences and influences - some of them claimed that we were inspired by Pink Floyd, some of them told about King Crimson, others about Gentle Giant, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull and Queen, and so and on, namig also a lot of rock groups that we’d never heard before. Of course we had influences, but not in the way that people think of. Personally I’m nobody’s fan, and I’ll never be. I’m “just” an artist. That’s why I replied to them that it would be impossible for us to contain all these big legendary rock groups in one, isn’t it? The truth was very simple instead and to explain this (or to avoid their need to qualify art) I quote Oscar Wilde: ‘When critics don’t agree with each other the artist is fully satistied’.” More links: Kogaion on discogs: http://www.discogs.com/Kogaion-Fragmente-Din-Poemul-Rock-Castelul/release/3688396 Kogaion on Rate Your Music: http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/kogaion/kogaion/ After Kogaion disbanded, Marius Baras continued to make music and released solo albums in various styles. Some of his solo work can be heard on his myspace page: http://myspace.com/mariusbaras/ Thanks for reading and listening! |

Excellent suggestion! This album truly is a hidden gem, one of the better and less well known Romanian prog rock albums, and definitely deserves some attention... it's out of print, but I'm sure copies could turn up from time to time, I hope it will be re-released at some point in the future. I would love to have heard the full stage version.

A couple of tubes to go with the suggestion:
Not too dissimilar to Sfinx - another fine (but much earlier) Romanian band who we have on here in Eclectic: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2344 |

Nice one. Symphonic at times but also spacey and having a strong (Romanian?) folk influence, while the keyboards have that characteristic digital / Neo sound. Sfinx was moved from Prog Folk to Eclectic several years ago; I think the same reasons for Sfinx not moving to Symph would apply to Kogaion i.e. the psych and indigenous folk influences. Kogaion was also given the briefest of mentions in the Eclectic Team thread some five years ago - I think members leaving the site for whatever reason may have had something to do with the band not being discussed further at that time. Will ask the current Eclectic team to check it out.

A few years ago I received several Romanian albums from my good friend Zsolt Enyedi, among which I found Sfinx (Already reviewed Zalmoxe) and also an album by Kogaian.
The identity of sounds is amazing, they have Symphonic roots but the most obvious element is the Eastern Europe Folk music. I believe that wherever Sfinx is, Kogaian most follow them. Great band Iván

This can be used as the official web site - it's Marius Baras' web site, but it includes info on Kogaion also:

Someone with access to the collab zone needs to work back through the Eclectic team thread to find out what happened with this band.

Still being evaluated on eclectic, it seems I'm the only one left voting If I remember correctly it didn't have enough samples for evaluating properly. Currently it has one Move and one Yes.

We received the band two days ago, and even though we agree they are not Symphonic, we don't want to play ping pong with them. Accepted in Symphonic. If somebody got the info,. please write the bio. Iván
