I was never a big fan of ELP, but Carl Palmer was a brilliant drummer and was integral part of the ELP sound. Just as Bonham was for Zep, Collins for Genesis and Peart for Rush.

I agree about Cozy being the wrong drummer for ELP.Emerson and Lake could have had Simon Phillips who was a much more technically adept drummer(check out his work with Mike Oldfield) but plumped for the bigger 'name' instead. This was done for marketing reasons and not musical reasons IMO.

Carl is still a great drummer but you are right that his drumming was an integral part of the ELP sound.Probably irreplaceable if truth be told.

richardh:

Is it the same Simon Phillips that played drums on the first Michael Schenker Group album?? That name really rings a bell. If it was, then I agree his drumming would have been far more suitable for ELP. Theres a traqck on that MSG album called 'Into the Arena' an instrumental and Phillips really shows off his talents. Very fiddly, but precise and exciting. If it is the same guy, its been many years since I've listened to that album.

I had a friend at school who always moaoned about his drumming, being too 'wimpy' Ironically he was a Cozy Powell fan, and Powell, of course also played for MSG.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Neil Peart, obviously Carl Palmer, Cozy WAS one of the greatest, with great diapazone. Dave Chambers (lately with Niacin, before--too long to mention), Chad Wakerman!!!! Especially latest work with Holdsworth on All Night Wrong and, of course, Bill Brufford!!! BTW, Alan White is not bad either. Groundbreaking work, however--will always be Palmer--one is bound to be, once is represented on such level of musicmanship as ELP!!!
Respect
