I like all the albums I've heard. But I haven't heard Islands or The ConsruKction of Light.

My Top 3 Favorite Studio Albums:

Discipline

LTIA

Red

But I prefer listening to the live albums.

My favorite KC's live is Absent Lovers: Live in Montreal 1984. Wow! That really is great stuff
On top of that, it's in my hometown so it holds a special meaning for me

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

I think that Islands is being placed too low. I mean, I think Beat is worse
than Islands, and it's my least favorite album of that era. Islands has good
stuff on it, such as Sailor's Tale, Ladies of the Road, The Letter reminds
me of a song off of Lizard for some reason, and Formentera Lady is a
great prelude to Sailor's Tale. This is my top 10:

1. In The Court Of The Crimson King
2. Larks' Tongues In Aspic
3. Starless And Bible Black
4. Lizard
5. Islands
6. In The Wake Of Poseidon
7. Red
8. Discipline
9. Three of a Perfect Pair
10. Thrak

Most of the selections are right on the tick, I just think Islands is a well-
crafted, well-sculpted album. I dunno, I feel like a prat for posting this. I
just like Islands a lot.

hahahha don't feel like a prat.. heck you've already had one thread closed, I'm jeolous I haven't had one closed yet.   Anyway I know I had Islands low on my list, but that's a long way from saying I don't enjoy it or think it's crap.  I'm just not a Boz Burrell fan, and a big Greg Lake and John Wetton fan so I enjoy those incarnations more.  It's all relative I guess especially with a group like King Crimson....if you don't like an album... just wait for the next one when Fripp runs off the group members and has a new group and direction for the group.   King Crimson... the definative  prog rock group IMO.

Yeah, I know, actually, I'm not a Burrell fan either, mainly because he was
only around for one album. I like Wetton and Lake a lot more, because they
have been around longer, and because I'm an ELP fan as well. I mainly like
Islands for Sailor's Tale and Ladies of the Road. But, I dunno, I guess I'm just
a King Crimson freak, and I get slightly defensive when I think someone's
cursing down one of their albums....but thanks for clearing that up for me.
What you said is utterly true.

honestly a recent revalation.. considered for the longest time Yes to be.  Discipline is the last K.C. album I actually own (a victim of my own prejudices toward 'classic' prog)... but have had the chance to hear some of their latter stuff and ... popular music may have passed prog by... but  King Crimson has never really passed prog by has it?

no, they haven't. King Crimson always stays with prog and will forever. They
have refused to fall into the vat of commercial pop success and that makes
them one of the most legendary prog bands of all time.

Exactly! That is what is great about King Crimson. They never stop to progress. Their last album is really interesting and still full of innovation and it came out about 35 years after their debut album. I can't wait for their next album. Especially since I found out Tony Levin was back with the band. Unfortunately, it won't come out before another year or two

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

And they are always a head of their times. I listened to The Power To Believe and I hear new bands trying to recreate that type of sound today. Albeit this was the case with ITCOTKC back in '69

Their sound was always brilliant and unique, and yes, it's true, they were
always ahead of their times. I mean, King Crimson helped spawn Emerson,
Lake, and Palmer, who are a legendary band in their own right! They are
capable of so much, and have shown on every occasion, to be up to the
challenge.

as far as latter K.C.... I've only heard some scattered songs via... samples.   What album post-Discipline would you all recommend?

In the Court of the Crimson King is their best. Nothing else touched it.

But their other albums are beyond magnificent, too. Lark's Tongues especially. That, I think, is their second best, followed by (in order):

Lizard
Red
In The Wake Of Poseidon
Islands
Starless and Bible Black

EDIT: I don't bother mentioning Discipline. I've reviewed that album if you want to see what I think of it.

Try their last one The Power to Believe. It is a pretty strong album in my opinion. Maybe I'm a KC fanboy but I would also recommend Thrak, Three of a perfect pair and The Construcktion of Light. Most people on this forum won't agree with me on these one I think but anyway I really like them. I really enjoy post Discipline Crimson
