Aqualung is the best that Tull released, there is very little that does not work on Aqualung, easily my fav JTull release ever.
But Moving Pictures changed Rush forever, it brought all they were doing into one concise release especially during a time that rock music was changing, for the worst. Punk was taking over and the new wave stuff was coming on strong, traditional rock and especially progressive rock was dying if not dead already, so releasing another Hemispheres, CoS or even Aqualung made no sense in 79/80. If you watch Rush interviews and documentaries they were beyond surprised at how the public took to Tom Sawyer, a simple song but yet super hard to play right. Moving Pictures is more seminal than Aqualung will ever be to the over all rock world. It is a better album too.

How can this be even close? Tull outclass Rush in every department - even more so on this pairing. Jeez!

I'm not surprised its close, I expected it to be further apart with JTull in lead due to when that album was released, the epitome of the prog era. Neither album is more prog than the other, all the songs stand on their own easily, Aqualung has more of a concept to it than MP. Class??? Rush are one of the most respected bands ever, with a high level of class towards not only other bands but the industry itself as well as reviewers. Moreover they were highly respectful of each other.....

I am sorry, but in every aspect - musicianship, vocals, lyrically, etc. Rush are nowhere near Tull. Having said that, 'Aqualung' is not really a prog album. I will also concede Tom Sawyer is possibly Rush's finest hour...
