I find your lack of Klaus Schulze & Lisa Gerard's Farscape disturbing, but not unsurprising.

Hostsonaten - Winterthrough
A Silver Mt Zion - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons
Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling
Agalloch - The White
Willowglass - Book of Hours

^ These should have been higher, bros.

Have you listened to Rheingold yet? It's twice as good. Wink

Agreed with Willowglass. One of my top surprises.

The biggest surprise for me this year is not who is or isnt on the list but the fact that there was such a large number of votes present. 06 and 07 were both disappointing in that only a few people voted, but this years list compiles the personal preferences of a substantial selection of people here, so clappies to all, especially Rico who stepped in to run this thing.Clap

As for the results, Blue Lambency Downward is in the top 10 so I'm happy.

I'm happy its not dominated by retro style bands and 2008 albums from 70s bands. I do feel its a weak list overall. I'm mostly just jaded because it doesn't exactly match the top 5 i voted for.

Have just come back from holidays and am pleased to see at least two of my choices in the top 10 Wink. Well done Rico! Now will have to check out the no.2 choice. Could be a very interesting listen.

Something's amiss if The Pineapple Thief's "Tightly Unwound" doesn't get at least a mention from one of you!

On my personal list that was submitted, Pineapple Thief's "Tightly Unwound" was my 4th favorite album of 2008.

I think I'm the only one who gave The White a vote. I didn't expect it to place anywhere in reality but still disappointed.

Needless to say I am again not fitting with the "PA" , knowing that the highest album I chose on this list are

13. Guapo - Elixirs
Van der Graaf Generator - Trisector
15. D.F.A. - 4th

Nice group showing though!!! Three in a row

BTW, Great Job, RicoClapStarClapStar

It's there at number 70.

I did Micky...their album of the year list lost a lot of credibility in 2007 when they had the new Guns n' Roses album at number 1...before it was even released!!!!.......and there it is again this year at number 3!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty predictable about AC/DC making number 1 and though it's their best in years it's still pretty mediocre.

Ha! You call that "not fitting" in with the PA progholes progheads, ST? Stern SmileI fart in your general direction! Wink

Try not having heard (let alone purchased) ANY of the albums listed or mentioned in this thread, and thus being totally unable to vote, for yet another year! What's more, I DON"T CARE!Shocked

Now THAT's being out of sync with your supposed peers! Stern Smile

I would like to hear the Steven Wilson, though, as I've thoroughly enjoyed the solo Wilson and Blackfield which I've heard. Most Porcupine Tree does very little for me (the notable exception so far being Lightbulb Sun, which I love), and I seem to have a decided preference for Mr. Wilson's (to me) more accessible and melodic "pop" side.

I'd also like to check out VDGG's new one, also favourably mentioned here. Smile

As for (non-prog) 2008 releases which I have purchased and enjoyed, I'd have nominated the Raconteurs' masterful, can't miss, 70s stylings of Consolers of the Lonely; the cheery, infectious, intelligent, ska and African-flavored eponymous indie debut from Vampire Weekend; REM's hard-hitting, aptly-titled  Accelerate; and the stalwart and ever-dependable Ry Cooder's rocking, original concept album I Flathead. (Notables from 2007 would include Lucinda Williams' excellent and soulful West; the White Stripes' Zeppelin-esque, retro-partying Icky Thump; the lovely and rootsy Robert Plant & Alison Krauss collaboration Raising Sand; and Neil Young's solid return to form on Chrome Dreams II.)

Buying newer prog is a credit-card-only Amazonian proposition for me -- I can't even find IQ at the large HMV when in Toronto! I simply don't care enough about most new prog to seek it out (I find most neo to be bland and generic, and the prog metal which seems to dominate the scene today is simply not to my taste).  Given loads of disposable Visa bucks, though, I'd buy some Godspeed You Black Emperor, and soon flesh out my struggling IQ and Umphrey's McGee collections.... Ermm

Knowing your preferences a little bit, for non-prog I would recommend Fleet Foxes - my personal top band/album of '08.  Poppy Americana sounding with a touch of west coast and alternative...the vocal harmonies are very good.  If you like Wilco you'll probably like these guys.  Check out samples at myspace or amazonSmile
