Hi Y'all, Just wondering if anybody on this site likes any of my current favorite bands: Therion, Ayreon, Evergrey, Within Temptation, DGM, Everon, Gary Hughes, Cornerstone, Sonata Arctica, Lacuna Coil, Symphony X, Kamelot, Mostly Autumn, Pendragon, Nightwish, Moonsorrow, The Sins of Thy Beloved, Lacrimosa, Mob Rules, Threshold, GB Arts, Samael ? I better stop I could go on and on. Any way even if you don't like them I would feel better if some of you at least heard of some of them! Caio Edited by semismart |

Caio, You are not the one to know these metal bands ("you're not, you're not, you're not alone..." dixit who you know). But I think people here don't want to speak about anything else but progressive music. For example, if I would like to launch a new topic about TOTO or Smashing Pumpkins, who would reply ? Mostly Autumn, Pendragon, Threshold, Ayreon ARE prog. Ayreon is great, Pendragon is not my cup of tea (earlier Marillion or current IQ are much better to my mind), and Mostly autumn are a decent prog-rock band. Nightwish, Lacuna coil, Within Temptation : if they hadn't a female vocalist, I don't know if they would be worth listening to. By the way, do you know The Gathering, another atmospheric metal band lead by a female vocalist ? They are close to the prog genre, because they appeared on some prog festivals. Kamelot : I heard some songs of theirs, and it's quite OK for me. Concerning GB Arts, they are also a decent metal band. Samael : a GREAT band. Especially the album : "Passage". The music has a slow pace, a special mention to the drummer, with a fine keyboard work. Vocals are tortured, something between Coroner's vocals and black-metal typical voices. This album can even appeal to DT fans. I think their music is more techno-oriented currently ? Another album in the same vein of Samael's 'Passage' : 'Tales from the thousand lakes' by Amorphis, vocals are growling but the music is magic. |

You see, That's my point. It's all Prog music. They may be offshoots of straight prog music but it's derived from prog music and is a subgenre of prog music. It's like a tree in geneology, The trunk is straight prog rock/metal and the branches are all the sub genres For instance here is a list of bands that will be performing at ProgPower IV in Atlanta Ga. on Sept 5 & 6. It is an annual concert of progressive bands from around the world and is already sold out : Friday:
*Please note that Nightwish have requested the 4th slot.*

Of course I know Within Temptation! They're Dutch. And I think they... suck. It is NOT prog rock! Ayreon is great (who would disagree with me there?) |

Mostly Autumn are one of my favorite bands. I saw them 6 times last year and have met and chatted to everyone in the band on several occasions. I am not convinced I can put them in the prog bracket though but then I suppose I dont really know what defines prog. |

Oh but I think they are. That's the point, each one is in a Sub-genre that is a derivative of Prog Rock or Prog metal In effect Prog Rock/Metal is the daddy of many Sub-genres like Symphonic Metal (Nightwish and Therion etc.), Epic Power Metal (Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica etc.), Gothic Metal (Tristania, Within Temptation etc,) Darkwave (Lacrimosa, Dargaard etc), Neo Classical Prog (Arena, Marillion, Mostly Autumn etc) and so forth. I think everyone on Prog Archives is trying to be such purists that they are denying the roots of most of Europes non pop/non hip-hop rock based music |

I'm sorry, but Within Temptation is not a progband. They play Gothic-metal. Good Gothic metal, but still... How can something like Gothic be progressive anyway. It's one big hype.

I guess people are misunderstanding where I'm coming from. Of course Gothic Metal is not Prog-rock but it came from Prog-rock the way prog-rock came from rock and roll which came from Rhythm and Blues etc. Progressive rock and metal were the jumping off point formany sub genres, Gothic included. What many members on this site seem to like and discuss is what I think of as straight Prog-Rock I actually wrote an essay on this subject which is posted on Epinions. If you'd like to see more of this viewpoint here are links to these posts: http://www.epinions.com/content_3597115524 http://www.epinions.com/content_3630669956 If you read them, let me know what you think. |

At this point, I'm only familiar with Ayreon and Symphony X off that list, and I truly love them.
The vocalist from Mostly Autumn deserves credit as a good singer--that I know from hearing her on The Human Equation, but I don't know enough about the style of music to know if I'd like their albums or not. |

I believe that was a joke based on the emoticon. Anywho, if any of you poor souls haven't yet heard Ayreon's The Human Equation, do yourself a favour and buy it now. The best prog album of the new millenium. I've also been into Therion lately. I'm not sure about their prog credentials either, but they're on PA so go figure. |
