I haven't heard the new one yet, but was slightly disappointed with 'Eternal' and the mcd 'Exodus'. IMO they just followed the formula set on 'Passage' without really adding interesting new elements to it. I should add that I only heard 'Eternal' a few times at a friends house.

I think everyone on Prog Archives is trying to be such purists that they are denying the roots of most of Europes non pop/non hip-hop rock based music

I don't think symphonic metal is derived from prog rock (or prog metal, for that matter). Nearly all the sounds can be traced back to Devil Doll (or various gothers), and while Devil Doll are progressive, they were totally removed from any sort of prog scene. Likewise the sort of power metal you mention is oftentimes 80s worship but faster. Gothic metal comes from goth (obviously). I'm not up on darkwave but it seems to have roots in goth and ambient. Finally, Arena and Marillion are neo progressive, not neo classical!

edit: I didn't read your follow-up post. But still, there aren't really any elements of prog I can hear in most symphonic metal, power metal, gothic metal or darkwave. I do qualify that with most, though, since I assume Hammers of Misfortune would get lumped in with power metal, and they sound very proggy to me.

I find
Lacrimosa,Samael
fantastic,

Therion, Ayreon, Evergrey, Mostly Autumn,  Moonsorrow,
fairly good,

Pendragon, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Symphony X, Within Temptation, Threshold,
alright but a bit dull

Sonata Arctica, Kamelot,
horrible

and haven't heard
DGM, Everon, Gary Hughes, Cornerstone,  The Sins of Thy Beloved,  Mob Rules, GB Arts.

edit: to AngelRat: I absolutely love the new Samael (the songs I've heard, anyway). What is it you don't like?

I like Therion. Especially their last double album 'Lemuria / Sirius B'. I liked Samael up 'til 'Passage' but never cared too much for the stuff after that. Ayreon has it's moments. Generally speaking I don't like prog metal too much (except for a few bands) and most of those gothic bands suck.

Oh yeah... I've just noticed that. WTF?

I believe that was a joke based on the emoticon.

Anywho, if any of you poor souls haven't yet heard Ayreon's The Human Equation, do yourself a favour and buy it now.  The best prog album of the new millenium.

I've also been into Therion lately.  I'm not sure about their prog credentials either, but they're on PA so go figure.

At this point, I'm only familiar with Ayreon and Symphony X off that list, and I truly love them.

The vocalist from Mostly Autumn deserves credit as a good singer--that I know from hearing her on The Human Equation, but I don't know enough about the style of music to know if I'd like their albums or not.

I guess people are misunderstanding where I'm coming from. Of course Gothic Metal is not Prog-rock but it came from Prog-rock the way prog-rock came from rock and roll which came from Rhythm and Blues etc.

Progressive rock and metal were the jumping off point formany sub genres, Gothic included.

What many members on this site seem to like and discuss is what I think of as straight Prog-Rock

I actually wrote an essay on this subject which is posted on Epinions. If you'd like to see more of this viewpoint here are links to these posts:

Mostly Autumn are one of my favorite bands. I saw them 6 times last year and have met and chatted to everyone in the band on several occasions.

I am not convinced I can put them in the prog bracket though but then I suppose I dont really know what defines prog.
