Topic: Therion, Ayreon, Evergrey etc. Posted: January 31 2005 at 12:25 |

I like Therion. Especially their last double album 'Lemuria / Sirius B'. I liked Samael up 'til 'Passage' but never cared too much for the stuff after that. Ayreon has it's moments. Generally speaking I don't like prog metal too much (except for a few bands) and most of those gothic bands suck.

I find
Lacrimosa,Samael
fantastic,
Therion, Ayreon, Evergrey, Mostly Autumn, Moonsorrow,
fairly good,
Pendragon, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Symphony X, Within Temptation, Threshold,
alright but a bit dull
Sonata Arctica, Kamelot,
horrible
and haven't heard
DGM, Everon, Gary Hughes, Cornerstone, The Sins of Thy Beloved, Mob Rules, GB Arts.
edit: to AngelRat: I absolutely love the new Samael (the songs I've heard, anyway). What is it you don't like?

Darkwave (Lacrimosa, Dargaard etc), Neo Classical Prog (Arena,

I don't think symphonic metal is derived from prog rock (or prog metal,
for that matter). Nearly all the sounds can be traced back to Devil
Doll (or various gothers), and while Devil Doll are progressive, they
were totally removed from any sort of prog scene. Likewise the sort of
power metal you mention is oftentimes 80s worship but faster. Gothic
metal comes from goth (obviously). I'm not up on darkwave but it seems
to have roots in goth and ambient. Finally, Arena and Marillion are neo
progressive, not neo classical!
edit: I didn't read your follow-up post. But still, there aren't really
any elements of prog I can hear in most symphonic metal, power metal,
gothic metal or darkwave. I do qualify that with most, though, since I assume Hammers of Misfortune would get lumped in with power metal, and they sound very proggy to me.

I haven't heard the new one yet, but was slightly disappointed with 'Eternal' and the mcd 'Exodus'. IMO they just followed the formula set on 'Passage' without really adding interesting new elements to it. I should add that I only heard 'Eternal' a few times at a friends house.
