Can I get a shout out/amen for an amazing live performance of this song on ESL?  In think it tops the studio cut?  What think yous?

I tend to agree.  I especially like Alex's guitar work in the live version.

I much prefer the Studio version. ESL is somewhat dissapointing for me. With a few exeptions, the songs on there are merely carbon copies of the originals.

I think that the best recorded live version is on the 3rd disc of Different Stages.

I think the live version from ESL is better, the song is exactly the same, the feeling is very different.

Autenticidad, actitud, pluralidad, espiritu e inteligencia, si es prog bien, si no, tambien.

I prefer the ESL version. I think Geddy sings it better, the overall production is better than on AFTK, and Alex's lead guitar work is fantastic. This version has a far more majestic feel IMO.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I prefer the studio versions. The timing on the live versions is odd, particularly just before the verses, also there's only 1 guitar.

The best part of the studio version IMO, is the intro. The atmosphere is caught perfectly, with the bird song and tuned percussion. I read that the birds song was recorded live in the courtyard of Rockfield studios in Wales, where Neil Peart had set up his tuned percussion early on the morning of the recording.

But I'll always prefer the live version of the song..

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I third that.  One of the greatest live discs ever recorded.

And I am not frightened of dying, any time will do, I
don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime.
I never said I was frightened of dying.

I like the extra little bit of drums between the two halves of the song on the live version.

Just before, "A thousand years have come and gone...."

Anyone remember it being shown on "THe Old Grey Whistle Test" ?

Am I showing my age now?

Do you remember that they actually showed it twice because so many people complained that they had not shown the full version. The following week Whispering Bob had to eat humble pie and for the first (and probably only) time ever the same song appeared on consecutive weeks!!!

I get into the ESL version more, but I've got to listen to The Trees first - for the proper effect.
If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud!
