Did your friends, acquaintances, co-workers and relatives know what progressive rock was when you first met them or talked to them about your musical tastes?

With the exception of my uncle and cousin, no.

Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive

Having grown up in the 60s and 70s, what we now call Prog was just part of the musical landscape, so yes.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I would say 'no' for co workers although my best friend is a Pink Floyd fan. In general anyone under the age of 35 that I meet doesn't have a clue that prog exists. In England record shops still don't have a prog section (that I've ever seen anyway) unlike say jazz ,classical and heavy metal. Prog is still lumped under 'rock'. This is perfectly understandable though.

Oh, I don't know. It's not that bad of one. It's relevant enough to make reflect about how (besides sharing blogs with those here) few people there are in my immediate circle of associates who care about the genre. That actually would be just one-a Persian guy in West L.A. who has a vast knowledge of prog and supplies me with most updates. It's sad, really.

None of my friends or coworkers have any knowledge of prog, and I do my best not to play music for them.

My parents and brother have some minimal knowledge

If there was another one it was deleted. I initially had one but deleted and started over.

Unfortunately you deleted the one I tried to delete. I wanted my second one because of the questions.Confused I wanted the last question(the second poll corrected this but you deleted it)to say "some of them didn't." If you can somehow go in there and fix that it would be greatly appreciated. In fact if I ever meet you I'll buy you a beer or drink of your choice. Smile

I placed my vote as 'no'. I had friends in high school who certainly did, but that was a lifetime ago. No friends or co-workers of any recent age have known what progressive rock was. Some of them did have a taste for one or more isolated Prog bands, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd in particular.

Ok nevermind. I fixed it. Guess I'll have to buy myself a beer. :P

I once worked in a warehouse with a guy who I think was originally from the Dominican Republic. Somehow we got into a conversation about Genesis and then Peter Gabriel era Genesis. Almost out of the blue I asked him what Italian progressive bands he liked and he shouted out "Premiata Forneria Marconi." I have to say this took me by surprise but I wasn't really shocked. I later found out he knew about Camel. He then explained to me that a lot of guys down in the Central America area know about prog. This was in the year 2000. I lent him some prog tapes. At some point he quit then I wound up quitting a month or two later. Unfortunately I lost touch with him.

Some of them did. But since I tend to go for things off the beaten track, I have had a hard time relating my tastes to even people who I interact with that do know something about prog. Most of the people who I know or have known that like prog have heard about the big names like Floyd, ELP, Yes, Genesis, Tull, which is cool, but say the word Triumvirat  or Colosseum or Passport, and you get a quizzical look.
Actually one guy at work has heard of Triumvirat vaguely.
All family members are clueless about prog except the really big names.

I remember back around 1994 or so seeing this band at a bar. I got into the topic of progressive rock with one of the band members and he seemed to have been a fan(at least to some degree). He even asked me if I heard of a band called Kayak(which at that time I did).

My brother, only a year and a few months younger than I (both of us in our 40s), doesn't get my love for prog. He recently said to me, "You love prog in an ironic way, the way people love William Shatner's music." Ummmm... no. Nothing ironic about it. Prog, I mean. (But then, I don't get his love for the Talking Heads... I love Brian Eno, but Talking Heads?... Just doesn't interest me....)

The kids at my school think rock is AC/DC and Bon Jovi (that's just the musical ones) so I doubt any of them own a King Crimson record Confused
