Topic: Pawn Hearts vs. Larks Tongues Posted: October 21 2014 at 07:46 |
Just wondering which you prefer. Both are respectively the band's most experimental album (in my opinion), and they're very closely rated. For me, LTIA is a masterpiece, but Pawn Hearts is just on another level.
Thanks for any feedback

A close call. Both albums are good, but somewhat overrated. Imho these belong somewhere in the middle of the 3.5-4 star range.
I give my vote to Pawn Hearts because this album has one outstanding track: Man-erg.

Tough call indeed, but I'll have to give it to Crimson. Both are very unique sounding albums though. Barking mad in each their own way....but always interesting and, in some instances, pioneering a certain frivolous and disjointed soul of rock music.

Neither, so no vote.
Two of my least favourite prog bands, I'm afraid.

Can't decide. Both are quite impressive, though.

LTIA by a slim margin.
I love Lemmings and Man ERG from Pawn Hearts but never really got into Plague.

Pawn Hearts by a massive margin.
A top 10 fav album - up against a band that I've just never got!

Lark's Tongues was a masterpiece of intent more than realization: I never felt the actual recorded album did justice to the radical departure of the music itself, as heard in Crimson's live performances from the era. Pawn Hearts seems to me even now a more uncompromising musical statement: Hammill and company didn't pull their punches in the studio the way Fripp and Crimson did. On stage I would go with the Crimson King every time, all the time. But when comparing the albums I'll usually reach for Pawn Hearts...at least today. Ask me again tomorrow and the answer might be different...
