In my opinion, all prog collections, need to contain these two classic albums by these two classic prog groups. For me, a tough call. VDGG is definitely idiosyncratic in their musically approach and Pawn Hearts is to my ears their defining contribution. LTIA on the other hand is easily one of my favorite albums. It completely redefined KC and, again in my opinion, what could be done in the context of rock music. My call, LTIA.

Pawn Hearts is okay.

Larks' Tongues is my favorite KC album. I know where my vote is going.

i have never heard of pawn hears outside of A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers (and man what a good epic), but i have heard more into Larks' for a couple of months now even though pretty much the whole album is brought down on Youtube (f**kin' bullsh*t!!) so my vote goes to Crimson.

I really like that King Crimson album. I tried many times to get into that VDGG album and failed Confused

Both grew to 5 star albums for me and without playing them I honestly can't vote so i'll try to spin these in the next couple of days.

Really...? So just curious....who are two of your most favorite prog bands?

Camel first, with IQ and Genesis joint second. I also like Mostly Autumn, Strawbs, Riverside, Wishbone Ash, Gentle Giant, Pendragon, Marillion, Tull, Floyd, Yes, Gryphon, Horslips, Manfred Mann's Earthband, BJH, Rush, Focus, Iona and many other bands.

But I never have "got" VDGG or KC.

I cannot tolerate Hammil even in trace amounts .. LTIA, IMO, wasn't recorded too well, but otherwise it's one of the best albums out there.

What makes hard for me to pick is that Fripp is on both albums. Collectively some of his greatest work, IMHO.

I like all of those bands you listed and they are all more melodic straight ahead prog bands...except for GG.
KC and VDGG can have some difficult passages in their material and can be abrasive at times.

They lack an on-going melody that flies and soars on a keyboard - that would be my guess for why he dislikes them.

Can we please stop making polls in which I can't decide? Cry

Both. I'm not choosing one over the other (even though my top 100 gun-against-my-head list suggests otherwise).

/gun against your head.

So, now what? Wink

Pawn Hearts sounds unearthly, represents Hammill well—mad, dark, brilliant. While Larks is great, upon repeated listens I can't stand it. I haven't heard it for 4-or-so months, but no desire yet!!

VDGG were a more 'mental band' so I quite like them for it. KC were almost oppressive in their self conscious experimental way. WIth VDGG it just 'happens' and it is what it is. I vote VDGG!

but if Red was the choice I would vote for thatWink
