Topic: Experimental/Oddball Albums (1969) Posted: October 25 2014 at 11:23
Some of the most perplexing releases of 69, but also ones that continue to draw me in. I purposly left out Ummagumma and Trout Mask Replica, because it would've been a landslide victory to either. Anyway, safe to say this poll contains some of the most progressive releases of it's day. It also has a strange folk album with yodelling, so we're basically covered
I'd be very surprised if this poll makes it to the second page though

I've seen the stuff you post in the listening thread. My guess is that you'd enjoy that Terry Riley effort. Either way, it's one of those albums every experimental music fan should listen to at least once.
Alright maybe it's time for a little advertising. How about the strange psych folk act MIJ to start off with. I'm not even sure how to describe the music besides from having a delicate mixture of folk and psych. The vocals though take things to another level altogether - sounding equally like a theremin and this bizarre ethereal yodeller.

That was pretty good! I loved the vocals, I think "Martian love call" describes it pretty well. I gotta give it a full album listen along with the Terry Riley album.

Only heard the cromagnon, terry riley, the deviants, and third ear band albums all the way through, and all of them are stellar but have to go with terry.

The only album I haven't heard is the MIJ one. That clip was amazing though. Atlantis is not among my favorite Sun Ra's which is where my vote would normally go. Its either Third Ear Band or Terry Riley's classics for me. The two albums here I'd actually spin every once in a while.

Only heard about half of those but went with Third Ear band....I own that on cd and always liked their stuff. Also like the Sun Ra and some of the Cromagnon .
As a side note I actually met Moondog once in 1970. He came to the college I attended and hung out near the main college union building where all the students hung out. He was often there talking to people about music and various things. I only said hello and didn't even know who he was at the time.

The MIJ album is really great all the way through. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone who digs the clip that I posted earlier.
Funny you mention Sun Ra's Atlantis like that. I have a few friends who all are massively into Sun Ra yet feel the same way you do about Atlantis. I happen to think it's one of his best albums.
