Which super drummer held down the beat better: Harrison from PT or Portnoy from DT and others.

To be rude: Harrison plays the drums; Portnoy beats them.

Portnoy is an insane drummer, he is a mix of metal, prog, hard rock and he does it very well. He is Dream Theater in my book....

Gavin is precision, smooth and has a sound that is infectious, I love watching his jazz videos. What I wish is that PT would get back going so I can hear Gavin again....He has been too absent IMO.

Gavin is who I pick here...but Portnoy is clearly the hardest working musician of the past 4-5 yrs.

Harrison is very accomplished.

I like Portnoy on Neal Morse's solo albums best but he can be a bit 'samey' to my ears.

I believe (IMO) it would be easyer for Portnoy to do a Porcupine Three gig as a drummer then it would be for Gavin to do a Dream Theater gig as a drummer, while both are steller drummers, Mike is bit better at variation in dubble bass peddal work, and Gavin has stated that, that is hes least "good" techniquem, though he mangaed it very well for my view, hes dubble pedal work is quite cool.

Can't decide. I like them equally, as different as they are.

I haven't really listened to Portnoy much, but I do think Gavin is great.  To be fair I'll abstain.

Disqualified from voting; too old to know who these two musicians even are.

Gavin, but to be honest none of these are among my fave drummers. Too much...erm....perfection involved. I think many musicians with this kind of talent (many different kinds of talent in music) have great difficulty in playing something "wrong" because their whole style revolves around being on.the.beat.the.whole.time. I like "flaws" and they add to music that little bit of je ne sais quoi that I just don't get from perfection. By the time they get to that stage they're not even flaws any more.
Then again I prefer music attained through the same method as the one found in my sig concerning flightTongue

I agree...I think Portnoy's playing of the past couple years with NM has been fantastic. Seeing him live on both T2 and Momentum Tours was fantastic, Portnoy was playing with such passion..he was having fun you could tell.
Versus the last tour with DT-BC&SL he looked bored and lifeless. The samey to me is what Portnoy is doing with Transatlantic.
