Hoslips' The Tain.

A brilliant album but released in 1973. They did the not so great Dancehall Sweethearts in 74.

The Tain is, indeed a total triumph; one of the very few truly great albums. But the more I listen to Dancehall Sweethearts, the more I like it; perhaps it's overshadowed a bit by what went before.

But Nighttown Boy, The Blind Can't Lead the Blind, Mad Pat, King of the Fairies and The Best Years of Our Lives are all wonderful, and the other tracks are all good - no fillers there.

I also like it for the stunning recording quality, too.

Aside from the well known classics (Red, Relayer, Lamb, You...), I would mention:

Invisible - same
Eloy - Floating
Le Orme - Contrappunti
Ange - Au-Delà Du Délire

And there it is.  The album that tops Relayer.  Thank you Scott.

I forget these things mostly because I have no idea what year albums were released.

If I had loved the B-side as much as I love the A-side it would have been a no brainer (or I guess I would choose Rock Bottom no matter what). Bittern Storm over Ulm-Half Asleep/Half Awake-Ruins is 23 minutes of a certain beauty you get nowhere else than in avant prog that I can never get enough of.

I'll have to give Dancehall Sweethearts another try, it's a long time since I listened to it. As you say The Tain is a masterwork but sadly is not widely acknowledged as such. The other Horslips album I really got into was the Book of Invasions. So many albums so little time!

How on earth could I forget to mention my most brand new favourite live album: ELP - 'Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, Ladies And Gentlemen!!

By the way I just took from my most brand new wishlist some 1974
albums very well praised in PA Forum but not yet mentioned in this thread:

Journey To The Centre Of The Earth - Rick Wakeman (1974-08)
Vive La Trance
- Amon Düül II
Hijack - Amon Düül II (1974-11)
Biglietto Per L'Inferno - Biglietto Per L'Inferno  (1974-11)
Mass Media Stars - Acqua Fragile  (1974-10 )
Il Tempo Della Gioia - Quella Vecchia Locanda

And I would like to know about Clic (1974-09) from Franco Battiato? It seems that he is a great italian artist, not only musically btw.

I think Relayer is bit overrated, I like it but can't hold a candle to the brilliance of CttE or shear ambition and beauty of Tales,  but not overrated as much as Red or the Lamb are. Neither group had the balls or creativity to do something as mad and wild as Soundchaser. That is one piece of music still exciting and visceral to listen to after 40 years and 100's .. 1000's of listens.

Red overrated? How dare you!

Depends on what country it was released in in '73.

You don't want to pick one album from your list?

1. True.

2. If push comes to shove, I have to say Red.

Mass Media Stars - Acqua Fragile  (1974-10 ) Worst band of all RPI of the 100+ I've heard. A really bad Genesis clone with awful vocals.
Il Tempo Della Gioia - Quella Vecchia Locanda

I'm a fan of Clic's easy on the ears take on minimalism in the vein of Terry Riley. But I'd say Sulle corde di Aries is a better starting point as well as being a better album.

He is, and still delivering the goods. Though he went "pop" in the early Eighties, his output has always kept a very high level of quality, musically and lyrically. If you understand some Italian (and you should, being from Brazil), by all means have a look at Battiato's lyrics, which are outstanding. Some of his late Seventies albums are very experimental and not at all easy to get into, but Pollution, Sulle Corde di Aries (a stone-cold masterpiece IMHO) and Clic! are all highly recommended.
