In prog, has to be a tie between You and Hall of the Mountain Grill. Mirage has to come in a close second. Some of the big boys didn't have releases that year, but it still was a year glutted by great prog.

It's a difficult choice, because there were so many great records released that year (Illusions, Relayer, Lamb, Aerolit). But if I had to pick one, it would be Red.

Months ago, I started a PA thread on Genesis, "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." That is my favorite 1974 album for prog...

i think the record's called "Diamond Dogs", and i'm not sure if it's really THAT proggy compared to the others.

Yep Michael678, I typed too quick without thinking much about it. This concept album to me is "proggish", maybe not heavily but certainly has prog elements. Also Bowie, himself besides guitar played saxes, the moog synthesizer and the mellotron. He also had 2 drummers on there.

I'm somewhat fond of "The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage", mainly because of "A Louse is not a Home". I'll go with that. Relayer comes in a close second.

I still enjoy Phaedra by Tangerine Dream most and have a soft spot for Hall of the Mountain Grill by Hawkwind with Gong's You in third place.

Very tough between Relayer and Lamb so we'll call it a tie. Both albums are my favorites by their respective bands and in my top 10 albums of all time. Relayer is Yes' most focused work and consistent work, IMO. Had Tales been trimmed down, THAT could have been my favorite Yes album. Really, trim 3 minutes off The Revealing Science of God, 5 minutes from The Remembering, leave off The Ancient (or trim at least 8 minutes from it) and take another 2 or 3 minutes from Ritual and that album would have been amazing. But I've digressed. But 1974 was an amazing year for Prog. lots of great albums mentioned (loved Red), don't think Rush's Fly By Night was (what a leap from their first album!).

Tull, Genesis and magma are 3 of the better bands from 74. All had at least 2 albums worth of music. Hit and miss songs but plenty of hits
|
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.
