Sheeesh, just look at the list for 1974 alone....and '74 is a year removed from the pinnacle of the rock era from '66-'73.  Seems every week a great album was released; nowadays I'll be lucky to scrape up two or three great albums in a year.....originality was rife back then - a veritable feast of great music, now we get warmed up leftovers without spice.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

In 1974, it was Relayer. Nowadays, it's Lamb.

But the greatest is not yet mentioned, though not being prog that's understandable:

Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan.

Fully agree with you. Tremendous album.

In 1974 I lost my mind:
Robin Trower "Bridge of Sighs" superb, progressive blues rock at funkiest, heavy stuff
Mountain "Twin Peaks - Live in Japan 1973" monumental thanks to great late Felix Pappalardi + "Avalanche" excellent
King Crimson "Starless and Bible Black" superb
The Doobie Brothers "What Once Were Vices Are Now Habits" superb their finest & proggiest
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band "The Impossible Dream" - The Hot City Symphony
Sparks "Kimono My House" - I thought they were from England because they were so awesome and very different from anybody else LOL ... and of course
Hurriganes "Roadrunner" heavy 50´s rock´n´roll Cool

After 40 years those above still are my favs and today I have much more, like
GENESIS "The Lamb" + many bootlegs from "The Pound" tour + a few more
Barclay James Harvest "Everyone Is Everybody´s Else" and "Live"
Ibis "Sun Supreme" a supreme album indeed from the master musicians, a gem in RPI and Nico di Palo´s and Maurizio Salvi´s finest hour
Pekka Pohjola "Harakka Bialoipokku" unique album even in Prog, no wonder Zappa asked join his band but Pohjola politely refused and I completely understand why
Quella Vecchia Locanda "Il tempo della gioia" just beautiful
Area "Caution Radiation Area" warning of atom power device in the hands of fools
Camel "Mirage" indeed Lady Fantasy
PFM "L´isola di niente" very nice
Procession "Fiaba" a classic RPI
Biglietto per l´Inferno heavy symphonic prog
Be-Bob Deluxe "Futurama" Bill Nelson is an intellectual
Le Orme "Contrappunti" in "classical music", harmony
King Crimson "Starless and Bible Black" and "Red" very strong with the saddest song ever
Kansas very strong American, heavy gospel music
Yes "Relayer" feat. great Patrick "There are not so many prog musicians in Switzerland, aren´t there " Moraz
Alusa Fallax "Interno alla via cattiva educazione" classic RPI at finest
Renaissance "Turn of the Cards" Annie is an angel vs. the 2nd saddest song
Blue Öyster Cult "Secret Treaties" but not including its worst tune
Focus "Hamburger Concerto" Thjis van Lee, Jan Akkerman, Bert Ruiter playing "classical" music
ELP Triple Live - a perfect revenge to all stoopid critics Tongue
Queen "Sheer Heart Attack" fine heavy rock - ... and even still
Sparks "Kimono" - not the whole album anymore really but "This Town Ain´t Big Enough for Both Us" - quite true LOL

From the Mars Hotel - excellent Grateful Dead studio album, which came on the heels of Wake of the Flood and a year before Blues for Allah.  Anyone still not on board with the Dead as a progressive rock band should check out these records.
