I hate being mean to any artists, except perhaps those who foster
a spirit of nihilism or darkness in their music.  I'm listening to
"Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear" (1983) for the first time and getting
through all of it, I'm just about done.  It's just background music
at work.  I'm struck by how exactly it is like Genesis from ten
years previous, with maybe a touch of post-Gabriel Genesis thrown
in.  I think maybe it's meant to be a little like Dr. Who, a little
bit campy?   Dr. Who was that way on purpose, does Marillion
bring a sense of humor to their work?  The ultimate neo-prog
group for me would be the ones that had some camp involved.

I've tried and tried to get into this genre, I'd estiamte that less than 10% of what I hear would I ever want to hear again. Several of the poll statements are relevant but I choose...

"Not so much cheesy as not bringing anything new to the table"

as the MOST applicable

As with Prog Metal, I find a lot of cheese here but it is of a tastier variety.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I'm not really a "customer" of neo, so I have a very limited knowledge of it. Sometimes I'm in the mood for some of that stuff, though, and I'm well aware that Collins Genesis (which I love) is a key influence on that stuff.

Unfortunately, no one is forcing you to create negative, disparaging polls. But still you do.

Negative? Well I'm just asking for people's opinion. It's funny and ironic that you are accusing me of being negative though. Is it your plan to fight my negativity with your own?
Just expressing my opinion. Polls that have negative leading questions and disparaging poll options cannot be anything but negative. Somehow I cannot imagine that you would start a Poll with "Does Symphonic Prog sound boring to you?", or "Does Relayer sound like a cacophonous noise to you?"

There are ways to canvas opinion that do not start from a negative stance, this is not one of them.

Though I am not particularly interested in neo-prog, nor particularly thrilled by what I have heard, there are a lot of people who enjoy the subgenre. Variety is, after all, the spice of life! I feel no need to bash something that doesn't float my boat: I just ignore it, and listen to what I like.

In any case, I voted for "not so much cheesy, as not bringing anything new to the table".

Seriously, why do you even care? I suggest you take your own advice before you reprimand me. Can't you express yourself in a way that doesn't bait people and put them on the defensive? Anyway, my polls are only negative if you are making the assumption that "cheese" has to be a negative thing. Otherwise it's up to those who respond and or vote in the poll and not you or I to make assumptions about the term "cheesy." I only used the word "cheesy" because I have heard other people use the term as it is applied to prog metal and neo prog. Therefore please do not make assumptions about my intentions in creating this poll!!!!

Your negative comments about my supposed negative polls are hypocritical to say the least.

Alright. Nothing wrong with that. See if I thought cheesy had to be a bad thing I would get all pissed off at this kind of comment but I'm not because I welcome these kinds of comments. Smile

So really I couldn't care less as long as the music is entertaining and absorbing.

Funny because I actually like spoken word in prog. I even like it in Rick Wakeman's "journey to the center of the earth." However, I do admit it sounds cheesy on the one track on Eloy's "power and the passion" album. I still like that track though.

LOL It is not hypocritical to register my disapproval of two polls created in 3 minutes of each other that refer to two subgenres of music as "cheesy".

If you want to put a positive spin on the word "cheesy" then that's just cool, but that would make my initial remark in this thread positive too.

Sure, you can pretend that's what I was referring to why not. We can also pretend you are a happy positive person on here who only has nice things to say in threads. Smile

I wasn't putting any spin on it. YOU WERE!

Anyway, I am done with our conversation here.
