Hamburger Concerto, no doubt.
I find Eruption too fragmentized, and Anonymous is definitely not one of my fave Focus tracks.

The Hamburger is IMHO by far their best epic track.

OK let's dissect these.

Eruption - I first bought Moving Waves in 1973 - It simply is an astonishing work. Akkerman's guitar playing was in my opinion at it's peak. Tommy (in Eruption) is about the best guitar solo in the history of contemporary music. Incredible for it's time i.e. 1971.

Anonymus II - The first 2/3s of the vinyl side makes my hair stand on end. Probably the best orchestrated jam session ever....it feels that it was put to tape without any overdubs....just a band displaying it's mindboggling musicianship without the need of recording gimmickry. When Akkerman start's his electric guitar bit followed by van der Linden's extended (read boring) drum solo it loses me. Yes, it all went far too long but van Leer's manic flute work and organ flowing into Bert Ruiter's bass bit in the first section is etched in prog folklore (if there is one i.e. a prog folklore!)

Hamburger Concerto - great throughout - yes, yes, yes simply magnificent....but it's not quite as exciting as Eruption IMHO.

So it's Eruption from me.

Just in case for those who have not voted yet as they might be unsure which to vote (all great), listen this this :) maybe I can sway a vote Big smile Eruption buy Focus starts a beautiful orchestral bit turning a fabulous slow melodic tune a bit like perisienne walkways by Gary Moore, thereafter with a great drum into turning into a fantastic clever avant garde jazz master extraordinaire piece but instead of the sax or trumpet it's the guitar doing the prolipupupupu's lilipupupu's :) and thereafter hahaha it gets better Van Leer on the most explosive eargasmic mellotron coupled with Akkerman on guitars, all perfect insync, keeping building steps going higher and higher and higher to explosive nonstop brilliance! ApproveThumbs Up   Hug

I think most who are fans of Bitches Brew by Miles Davis would pick Eruption too among these above Smile

^ A true lilipilipupupu MASTERPIECE. Gosh, I must've bought Moving Waves 20-odd years ago - and never get tired of it (unlike the usual CTTE, DSOTM etc.). And never wear out WYWH - always bliss, every time.....

Anonymous II isn't an 'epic'. It's a jam session. A really long one.

I vote Hamburger Concerto

Le Clochard is an exquisite piece, and way too short......
Also Cathedral de Strasbourg is beautiful.

Those two both great too! I cannot fault them, except one is typical Andalucían acoustic guitar tune (Le Clochard) and  Cathedral de Strasbourg is very organ or rather mellotron (church orchestration classic moozik) orientated.

Eruption is, too me, a masterful composition that could have been rehearsed, performed and recorded better. The problem with Focus is that you had all these emotional virtuosi who had great trouble playing second fiddle (or got bored when they had to). Each one is just waiting, waiting, WAITING for their chance to shine for their solo.

While I appreciate the minds and talented musicians working on Anonymous II, it is too cold and emotionless to me.

Hamburger Concerto is the most polished, the tightest, yet it is also the most subdued and, at times, soporific.

My favorite Focus "epic" is "Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!"--though it is not included here due to its clocking in at 'only' 14 minutes. It is raw, it is energetic, it is frenetic, it is emotional, it is sloppy, it is virtuosic, it is funny, it is breathtaking, it is beautiful! What more could a music lover ask for?
