It's one of the reasons why it's their best album, imo...

To be fair the vocals don't actually ruin those early albums because the music is so strong.

Agreed. I mean, way up there amongst the rest of their catalog. Much ballsier than Freefall which can be filed under "Quaint" with its dopey "Down, down, down, down, down" lyrics and MOR bridge, all coalescing towards a "Good night, Cleveland!" ending. I do like Freefall though, but it was the band evolving and, I'm afraid, not worthy enough to tie Knife Edge's sandals.
