As great as Randy California was, I think the unsung hero of the band was Jay Ferguson,

I had to google that name - because it rang a bell ..

he did Thunder Island :)

He did some good stuff during his solo career. Thunder Island is one of the albums I own from him.
Yes, the unsung hero he was. I like especially his solo song "All Alone In The End Zone".
Jay and Randy are equal in terms of musical importance, I think.

This album deserves to be mentioned in the annals of progressive music. Aside from being one of the best things ever done around the SF/Psych scene, this album was also one of the best hidden satire albums ever done, and SPIRIT did the stuff even better. They satirize many of the popular bands of the day, and create material that is excellent along the way, which showed a musicianship and strength that very few people have and will ever show!

See if you can name/find who the satires are!

And "Nature's Way" is one of the prettiest things ever! It almost does not deserve to ever have been on AM radio!

Very pertinent dsicussion - I have been going through their first 5 albums and this one has not stood out as their best. But I will re-listen.

Hi,

This is off its rocker!

Here goes some of the satirical stuff on that album.

curtis Mayfield, Chicago, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Big Brother .................... for starters ... c'mon ... go listen to it ... we still need to find the keyboard fun solo!

"Mr Skin" sounds like it could be either Curtis Mayfield or Chicago
Or maybe "Morning Will Come" is Chicago, come to think of it.
The Dead or Airplane could be represented by "Why Can't I Be Free", that sounds kind of resembles some of their psychedelic acoustic ballads of the time.
Big Brother... uh "When I Touch You" maybe?  for the heavy blooze feel?
"Nothin' to Hide" has always struck me as having parodic elements (especially the over-the-top slide guitar solo), but I can't place what it might be a parody of.
The song "Animal Zoo" is pretty popular with Deadheads, I remember hearing a cover of that song once... don't ask where.

^I'm glad so many commented on this album. It's one of my 'closet' classics.

It's albums like this that makes me not want to discuss "progressive" music! The title itself, does not acknowledge the inspirations ... and no one even sees that James Gurley taught Jimmi Page how to do his loud leads, as well as many others ... because there is no way that dope-heads in SF and LA, can possibly inspire anyone in London! Even Iron Butterfly with heavy organ and keyboards doesn't count!

I also like Paul Kantner's solo albums, including the ones with Grace. They are all fine, fine albums, and a lot more experimental and intuitive than half the crap considered tops in "progressive".
