Tomorrow (Saturday), I will begin a poll series comparing important groups in the US and UK in the development of indie rock, beginning with punk. I will be going through artists of the punk, post-punk, goth rock, hardcore punk, post-hardcore, noise rock, new wave, Madchester, shoegaze, emo, britpop, post-britpop, post-rock, math rock, lo-fi, grunge, and slowcore veins, among several yet-to-be-classified artists.
Having scratched my head to provide decent match-ups over the week, I have made some notable exclusions. No band went unconsidered, but the primary problem I had with match-ups was simply that the US has a larger population than the UK and there are a lot more bands that I had to leave out. This was especially true when dealing with late-90s rock when the UK was more preoccupied with electronic music than the US. Because of this, Sleater-Kinney, Unwound, Modest Mouse, Red House Painters, and Neutral Milk Hotel are among the excluded. I did try to compromise, however, by including at least one artist from each scene, even if some of the important ones were left out. On top of this there were some bands that just could not aptly be compared to any other groups in style, influence, popularity. I tried to include many of these as best as I could, but left out of the polls were Spacemen 3, who I want to credit for their hefty influence on shoegaze, and for being a trip of a band. I did, however, include their offshoot, Spiritualized, who is also acclaimed and influential. I will do three pairs a day on Saturday and Sunday for as many weeks as it takes to exhaust the list, and will post videos of a song from each along with a write-up if I can think one up. I hope you all have fun with this, tomorrow. If you know the bands, vote! If you don't, stick around and listen to the videos. You may discover some bands you like. I know I discovered plenty of bands I'm enjoying while making these matchups. Cheers and happy voting So far: The Buzzcocks vs. The Ramones http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100639&PID=5095806#5095806 Sex Pistols vs. Minor Threat http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100640&PID=5095804#5095804 The Clash vs. Patti Smith http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100641 Crass vs. Husker Du http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100647&PID=5095808#5095808 The Stranglers vs. Minutemen http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100649&PID=5095809#5095809 The Damned vs. The Replacements http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100648&PID=5095811#5095811 Magazine vs. Rites of Spring http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100721 Gang of Four vs. Mission of Burma http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100722 Siouxsie and the Banshees vs. Television http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100725&PID=5099487 Killing Joke vs. Black Flag http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100737 Bauhaus vs. Christian Death http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100738 The Cure vs. Big Black http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100739 Joy Division vs. Talking Heads http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100740 Wire vs. The Feelies http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100777 The Smiths vs. R.E.M. http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100778 Echo & The Bunnymen vs. The B-52s http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100779 The Fall vs. Devo This Heat vs. Chrome Cabaret Voltaire vs. Suicide Throbbing Gristle vs. Swans Public Image Ltd. vs. Pere Ubu http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=100790

I'll be interested in the noise rock rounds. Perhaps I just have a different interpretation of noise rock, but most of the recs I've seen have been underwhelming to say the least.

The noise rock I'll be talking about will be early noise rock. Sonic Youth, Big Black, The Jesus and Mary Chain, etc. In other words, it may not be as extreme as Gang Wizard or the Dead C or anything. I do have Throbbing Gristle and Swans, though.

Just saw this *after* the first polls, didn't realize it was a big series thing. I'm not too into polls anymore but this one looks to be different and fun....haven't played some of these artists in quite a while!

Ahh, so I'm bound to be disappointed again. I'm not really a Swans fan, but I have somewhat liked what I've heard by TG.

Alright, guys. Two more polls are up, but I have to jet to a rehearsal. I will post the third and link all three in the OP when I get back.

I've gotta run. I've got three up so far, and I'll put a fourth up after I get back along with some thoughts on the poll results so far. The fourth match may throw some through a loop. I wasn't quite satisfied with all the matchups, but I decided to post because I wasn't expecting more than 7 or 8 people to vote! I do have my methods, though, and I've started to include explanations about why I placed certain groups together (even when stylistically or aesthetically disparate) in the OPs.

So, unsurprisingly, many of the UK (and European voters) voted UK in many of the polls and US voters typically voted US. There are exceptions, of course, but, for the most part, this is the trend. Maybe it has to do with social mannerisms and artistic values of their respective countries. I've found, through this poll series, that the UK strain of bands tends to value escapism and drama, where the American school tends to value lucidity and levity. American bands usually create something that reaches it's low point in its early second half, and then ends triumphantly, where UK bands barely pull up out of their emotional mire (which may have something to do with the popularity of the goth scene in the UK). What do you think? Do you find this to be true?

I mentioned exactly that in the Magazine vs. Rites of Spring thread, that there might be a cultural barrier at work behind me liking the former and not the latter. Not just RoS and Fugazi but also the entire emo scene they inspired I get the impression are much more popular on their own side of the Atlantic Ocean, it's somewhat obscure here in Europe but in North America it seems to have a fair amount of mainstream crossover popularity.
Which reminds me of the upcoming Throbbing Gristle vs. Swans poll, the No Wave movement and noise rock in general seems to be more popular in America than Europe too. Of course, the genre's even more popular in Japan than elsewhere. For the record it's NON that I myself consider the American Throbbing Gristle, but they don't seem to crossover with indie rock/punk fans anywhere as much. Actually NON are more popular with black/death metal fans perhaps because of their overt Satanic themes... Edited by Toaster Mantis - December 22 2014 at 05:03 |

NON works very well as an American TG. Both were very early, very dark and abrasive, and highly influential industrial projects.

I've not heard of NON until now. So much for "no band went unconsidered".
