Is there any particular prog you like that you may have spun on the turntable or in the CD deck a little too often to the extent that it lost some of its luster and prominence in the grand scheme of things? For example, I used to really dig Sensations' Fix's Boxes Paradise but had it on constant rotation in the vehicle's stereo system after a friend gave me a copy of its CD remaster some time back. Played it to death, unfortunately. It seemed much more special when I used to give a scratchy vinyl version of it on cassette the occasional listen. Also, I downloaded most of Crimso's Great Deceiver box set onto my MP3 player once and got saturated with it to the point that I now only get out live KC during the most infrequent of moments (still partial to U.S.A. though).

Fracture and Starless.

Couldn't listen to these two for a long, long time.
Came back, fortunately, and can't get enough of Fracture lately.

Sadly, the thrill is gone with most Gabriel-era Genesis (except Lamb) for me right now. Will came back.

Just about any live release from Yes, even if it is new and/or with a new line-up.  It is all the same tunes I have heard for decades, even some I heard regularly on the radio in the 70s.  I think I lived in a good market at the time because it was more than just Roundabout.  And You and I, Perpetual Change, Your Move/All Good People, Yours Is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper, were all sent over the airwaves when I was a teenager.  And I love all these songs!  It is just that I have heard them too many times.

The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

DSOTM & WYWH, played to death in my youth, hardly played at all over the last 2 decades, still know every note. I was better with Crimson, I deliberately rationed myself so I didn't do the same thing. Nowadays its a lot less likely as I'm constantly buying new music and exploring old material I don't have. Even the stuff I adore doesn't get played more than 3 or 4 times a year.

Most classic Pink Floyd and Supertramp albums: I used to play those a lot before I found this site. Now that I know much more prog artists, I barely play those. I hope I can appreciate Animals again someday Ermm

"the Musical Box" has lost its magic for me.  I listened to it soooo many times.  It'll be a few years before I can hear it again.

OK Computer lost its magic for awhile. Then I got better headphones and voila.

Also Wish You Were Here, but I think it's the same case as OK Computer.

Definitely DSOTM. I was overexposed to it when I was a teenager, and now I find it somewhat boring and (shall I say it?Wink) overrated.

There are some that I put away for a while and then end up enjoying again after a break. I do find I don't listen to The Beatles that often and they are my all time favorite. There used to be a certain amount of guilt associated until I heard Mattias Olsson talking about it. He said he doesn't need to listen to The Beatles anymore because all that music is in his head.

Funny, I don't really have any prog that qualifies in that way, but heavy rock for sure. Like Blue Cheer's first two albums, I over listened to them. And the first few albums by the Sabbs, for sure, as well. These records got in my head too much.

Non-topographic Yes albums have less spark than they used to for me.  Topographic for some reason bucks the trend and sounds more amazing than ever, it was their masterpiece imo, not CTTE.

I've lost nothing for the 67-75 Floyd though, I think they hold up pretty well actually.

Dark Side Of The Moon but I still feel it's the closest album to perfection i've ever heard.
Because of this i've been very careful not to overplay anything I own.

It doesn't happen to me if the album is really a gem. I've never got tired of Meddle or of CTTE. Only I still prefer listening to my old scratched vinyls than to clean and "colder" CD versions

Thick as a Brick was the first I thought of and A Passion Play second. It feels like I'm never gonna spin those two again. I still love their early quartet of albums + EP (68-71) although I've known these for just as long. It seems I'll never tire of other early discoveries such as In the Court, Nursery Cryme, Duck Stab/Buster & Glen, Trance Europa Express...

I'm trying to think of others but mostly its just that the magic has worn off, I've outgrown or found better stuff. That goes for albums I used to listen to obsessively like Disco Volante, California by Mr. Bungle and Dead Can Dance Aion + Into the Labyrinth

That's how it feels with my favorite metal bands like Judas Priest and Metallica. DT and Rush were the first prog bands I got into (though I had heard Yes as a kid), and I also don't feel like playing them as much. I still jam Court and CTTE regularly :)

It hasn't really happened to me, I guess because I listen to a lot of music of different genres, like jazz, classical, world, blues, etc. So when I listen to a great album, I tend to give it two spins at the most, and change to something else, so I don't really get tired of it, or play it to death as many people say, and come back to it if I want to, after playing three of four other albums.

Everyone's got their faves--but isn't the very term PROGRESSIVE rock maen that you'll move on?

If not--how can you justify being here?
