The Cure vs. Big Black
The Cure started as a simple pop-rock group until Robert Smith, having played in the Banshees, was inspired to create a sound all his own. The Cure's classic sound is typified by slow plodding drum beats, bleak synths, and ethereal guitars to create something colossal and nihilistic.
Similarly, Big Black aimed to to create something colossal and nihilistic, but went the route of abrasion, inspired by groups like Cabaret Voltaire. In contrast to The Cure's Romanticism, Big Black aimed for frightening realism and often Steve Albini's lyrics would revolve around taboo topics.

I pick the Cure. Haven't really gotten into Big Black, i just don't really buy their clang clang sound. I should try them again, now that I love the Swans' early clang clang sound. "Kerosene", the song you put up, is the one BB song I really like so far.
The Cure is awesome though. They were among the first "college" bands (now "alternative") i got into as a teenager.

Considering that Steve Albini's next band was called Rapeman, I get the impression that the guy names his bands by randomly going through old fetish porn magazines. Well, at least I would if his current one wasn't called Shellac that is.

As much as I like 'Atomizer', they just cannot compare to The Cure for me. 'Head on the Door' and 'Faith' are my favorites. 'The Top' also gets a nod for being just so damn quirky, although I find it hard to listen to all the way through.
