no endless river in top 2014 albums. at least not in the first 97 places, as of december 27th. with so many albums better than pink floyd's, 2014 gotta be the finest year in prog's history. by far.

Well there is always place for any band in the top 97 - it's just down to how people rate/review the given release.
Speaking personally, I like TER, but it's no more than an ok album to me. I'd probably rate it with 3 stars.
I'm not sure I can name 97 albums that are better right now, but give me a couple of months and I'll bet you that I canSmile

Albums I've listened to from 2014 that I prefer to TER:

Kayo Dot - Coffins On Io
Electric Orange - Vol 10
Watter - This World
Wovenhand - Refractory Obdurate
Fire! Orchestra - Enter
Syd Arthur - Sound Mirror
Møster! - Inner Earth
Agusa - Högtid
Brotherhood Of The Machine - Trip Hazard
Camera - Remember I Was Carbon Dioxide
Faust - j US t
Gong - I See You
Hail Spirit Noir - Oi Magoi
Knifeworld - The Unravelling
Ut Gret - Ancestors' Tale
Seven Impale - City Of The Sun
Krakatau - Water Near A Bridge
Major Parkinson - Twilight Cinema
Necromonkey - A Glimpse Of Possible Endings
Papir - llll
Siinai - Supermarket
Solaris - Martian Chronicles ll
Swans - To Be Kind
Øresund Space Collective - Music For Pogonologists
...and I'm probably forgetting quite a few but you get the pictureWink

I believe we are seeing a couple of factors here.

Objectively (if there is such as thing as objectivity when it comes to expressing musical preferences), on balance TER can't possibly be rated lower than 3 by anyone who cares enough to purchase this album. It's just too good overall: the musicianship and the songwriting, the sound engineering and the album art are nothing short of excellent.

In the year 2014 some may see TER as lacking in originality and innovation, but, you know, there is time to sow and there is time to reap. In the past, Pink Floyd broke many a mold; it's perfectly appropriate and classy for them to "sign off" with an album that recaps their unique heritage and pays tribute to that great era.

But not everyone sees it this way. Some people expected PF to come up with something that would revolutionize the music once again, which of course didn't happen. Others can't forgive PF for not disbanding after Waters chased Wright away and eventually slammed the door behind himself as well. Still others do not like instrumental music in general.

Another factor is, it turns out, that a number of folks who did love TER didn't find it necessary to write a 4- or 5-star review, saying that 'It's about music, not about ratings', or 'What's the point of reviewing something that everyone knows about already', and 'I don't want to force my opinion on others', and suchlike.

At the same time, at lot of bands whose 2014 albums made it into the PA's Top 100 have very devoted and outspoken fan community, which certainly helps with the ratings.

No, I don't think so. If I made a top 97 list, it will surely be there. Maybe somewhere in the 70s. But if I had the listening capacity of 500 or so people, I hardly doubt it will be in the list.

Oh, Master Argonaught.........you are twisting my arm......
Oh yeah - so far the only 2014 albums I have are The Endless River and Heaven And Earth - and Floyd qualifies, Yes doesn't (but I enjoy it enough)

I have not heard so many albums from this year, certainly not a hundred, but I did really like this album a lot, and it's perhaps the one that I have been coming back to the most... and there were a few albums I did like. From the few album I've heard, it's perhaps the one I have liked the best. However, I haven't got the so beloved "Road of Bones" yet; I don't actually know anything from IQ, but given the reviews this album has had, I guess I will have to get it.

I have heard some 30 albums, maybe a little more, of the 2014 vintage. Although Pink Floyd won't be found in my top 10 I cannot imagine that there are almost one hundred better albums to be found in this year.

Its a 3 star album at best although admittedly would make my top 20 list comfortably. However there may well be a whole load of stuff that is better.

I have worked my way through about 15 "prog" (as in "PA-listed") albums, and for a few non-PA ones. To my ear, the selection of titles that I picked from the PA 2014 Top 100 list showed the usual pattern: a handful of really good albums, but mostly fan-promoted stuff of somewhat limited value.

The good-to-excellent Redwings Nest by SOT, the Holdfénykert reissue and TER didn't even make the list.

Jeremy Pelt's Face Forward, Jeremy (fusion) and Andromeda's Live On Planet Earth (progressive big band) didn't even make it through the PA gate :)
