The Fall vs. Devo

The Fall started as a punk band and eventually evolved into something else entirely. With arrangements that threaten to collapse at any moment, but at points prove to be very tight, their defining factor was singer Mark E. Smith with his Joycean lyrics and announcer style voice, especially as members rotated several times. The became a favorite of John Peel, who said of them, "always the same... always different."

Devo started on the concept of "de-volution" believing that man had devolved instead evolved. Sporting satirical lyrics, their surreal manner on stage and in interviews, and jagged arrangements, they became key figures in post-punk and new wave.

I've only heard one Fall album.  Not going to investigate further.  Gotta go with my almost-homeboys here.

Just a question.

I don't read often, so i was curious was is implied by saying the lyricist of The Fall is Joycean? What characteristics did James Joyce have in his writing that was applied to lyricism?

I worship the Fall, so easy vote for me.  The Devo's first three albums are really good, though.  But The Fall is a Top 10 band for me.

Boy, this is a tough one. Apples and oranges as with many of these posts. I think The Fall would be a better competition against Père Ubu by the way, both are eccentric garage rock groups that were categorized as "post-punk" despite predating the punk subculture really becoming a thing. Right down to the strong influences from Captain Beefheart's Magic Band.

Mark E. Smith uses a stream-of-consciousness style, which James Joyce is famous for popularizing.

Those curious about Mark E. Smith's unique lyrical style should check out this song - along with the link which lists and analyzes the lyrics.  It's a thoroughly enriching and literary experience.
