Throbbing Gristle vs. Swans
Creating jarring, dark ostinato tracks, Throbbing Gristle were the key band in industrial. From the No Wave scene in New York, Swans create noise rock that was influential in the goth and industrial scenes. |

Swans are probably the band of the two I've listened to the most, but I'm very close to voting for Throbbing Gristle. Basically, they and the kind of electronically based dark ambient/industrial/noise they represent is the one and only genre of music I find genuinely disturbing to listen to. Same thing with Coil, Lustmord, NON and their ilk.
That's also the reason I don't listen to it very often, though. Well, one of the reasons, the other being that borrowing their albums from the public library means I'm probably on a police watch list of some sort.

Gristle by a country mile. Swans are fine, but you can't deny the tremendous influence and experimentation of the inventors of industrial music.
