Both essential bands at their peak and a tough choice as I'm a huge Rollins fan (seen him on 5 spoken word tours) but the political commentary of Jello was the single greatest thing about the whole US hardcore movement.  Rollins Flag lyrics were very cool about the internal struggle of an individual but Jello taught history lessons about the dark side of American politics and a different view of what America was doing in central America and other places.

Both great bands. Dead Kennedys made my favorite punk album so I'll go with them.

DK all the way. Totally essential. They along with Zappa helped turn me into a "question authority, maybe Ronnie isn't all that" kind of guy in the 80s.

DK was one of my first punk loves, but Flag need the support. Flag had some really killer and experimental years once Rollins joined and Ginn decided to actually use his virtuosity on guitar. The doom punk of My War's second side, Family Man having dark, slam poetry-esque spoken word monologues before some complex and kickin' guitar-led instrumentals... just excellent.
