Back in 92-93 something I saw them playing on an alt rock festival in Belgium.
The opened with the riff from 'A Passage To Bangkok'.

^I would venture to say that the ratio of people who responded to this endless poll Shocked as to liking or disliking Tool  is about 50/50.
 
But the question you asked was "Is Tool prog?" And we answered you regardless of  whether we liked the band or not.
 
That's what makes PA so awesome at times.

Regarding the issue of like vs. dislike, it's not hard to recognize the "progressiveness" of music you don't like.  I love Tool.  On the other hand, I absolutely hate Emerson Lake and Palmer's music.  I think it confirms all the negative stereotypes used by people who criticize "progressive rock".  I do recognize ELP's innovations.  Using a specific set of musical elements - longer songs with multiple parts, unusual time signatures - to define  "progressive" music limits it.  It's how the uninitiated (those who don't have much experience with "progressive" music) think of it.  It's unfortunate, and it doesn't help us expose great music to those who don't know it.

I kind of agree even though I do consider Tool to be prog metal. I see it with bands like Muse and maybe the Decemberists. Some of their stuff is prog or proggish but to be considered prog you need more than just a few songs or more than just one or two albums(unless the band only put out one or two albums). Phish could be another example. I don't know them that well but aren't they usually just considered a jam band? Some of their stuff might be proggy but I think most of it is jam band stuff.
