Hey everyone. Has anyone heard this band before? It's so over the top, but I love it! Does anyone have recommendations for other prog metal bands like them?

Ah, they were all the rage up to the end of 2013 around here. The Mountain is perfect modern heavy prog by way of the Giant.

If you like Haken- You may like Transatlantic, they are pretty darn good.

I'd finally discovered Visions from them recently. I've had The Mountain since it came out (because there was so much hype leading up to its release), and love that album, but I'm stunned with myself for not pursuing their previous albums earlier. I've recently purchased Aquarius, and will be getting that one in soon. I'm very much looking forward to their next release.

I haven't heard much Beardfish, but I'd toss their name in the mix. Their music is a tad less grandiose and a little more eclectic. Also their lyrics are less philosophical and more whimsical (reminiscent of Zappa in places). But in terms of heaviness, they're right there with Haken. Sleeping in Traffic, Part Two is definitely the place to start with them, from what I've heard.

^ I'd say go in order with the Sleeping In Traffic duology. Part One's opener "Sunrise" is a mindblower, probably marginally better an introduction than Part Two.

Haken is amazing band, I have all their albums and two of them on vinyl, The Mountain and the recent EP Restoration, which are songs from their original debut but re-recorded since most current band members are new.
I agree, take a listen to Transatlantic and maybe even Anathema, the recent releases by them Distant Satellites and Weather Systems.

Agreed, Transatlantic is a great place to go. They don't excite me nearly as much as Haken, or other bands, but their music is fantastic, and I'm a sucker for cover songs too. Smile

I love Weather Systems. One of the most beautiful (but still with some heaviness) albums I've heard this decade.

You should try To-Mera, the other band of Tom MacLean and Richard Henshell, Delusions and Exile being the best places to start. IMO they're the better band as they're far more unique.

Well it's not very similar but still I think that would be a good recommendation. Have you ever heard about a guy called David Maxim Micic? His album "BILO III" is pretty awesome, and Jeff Loomis, Jakub Zytecki and Per Nillson made solos for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t1WX9WXQZg

What I love about Haken is they take the counterpoint complexity of Gentle Giant and make it heavier and simultaneously more accessible. I've heard few others do that too, my favorite being "Author of Confusion" by Neal Morse. If you dig the songs "Cockroach King" and "Somebody" off The Mountain, check these I've found:

...and for the undisputed source material Tongue

Huge fan here...very stoked for seeing them on their upcoming tour.

I was kinda sad that Toronto was skipped over. Any Toronto fans in here?

I listen to Visions constantly and it's easily one of my favorite CDs from newer bands. However, I can't get into The Mountain as much. I've listened to it a few times and I think Visions is far superior.

Visions is a masterpiece. Aquarius is awesome and emotional but Visions is just... wow. Definitely my favorite prog metal band. Beardfish isn't metal but they push the same buttons, I find.

I've become a big Haken fan, but I came to them late.  I gave them a listen a few years ago, and I wasn't initially convinced.  I found their songs too manic, scattered, and long-winded.  I had to go through Leprous first; they're an amazing band.  Leprous has a similar hyper-driven musical style and a similar-sounding singer. It's the first band I would think of while listening to Haken.
I am the funkiest man on the planet!

Haken are amazing! I love them!

I'd also recommend:

Methodica
TesseracT
Il Rumore Bianco
Riverside

And, of course, Opeth and Tool. Always good! ;)

You might check out Anubis Gate and Leprous.  I'd even suggest Withem and Illusion Suite.  Haken is really good though.  I enjoy all of their albums with my favorite being the latest one, Affinity.

Although Leprous is from Norway,  they are very friendly with Haken and both bands influence each other.
