Metal rears it's head as 9 of this years entries are in metal related subgenres...most notably Opeth who begins their long journey from grunting doom metallers with prog tendencies to prog with doom metal tendencies.  Also interesting is Frank Zappa's Lather which was released in 1996 but consisted of material originally released in the late 70's.

These are the top 25 PA ranked albums with at least 65 ratings presented in order of ther QWR scores highest to lowest.

Vote for your favourite 1996 prog album!

Cardiacs forever.

I just have to say one more thing, because it's bugging me: Opeth was never doom, they were death. Tongue This is doom:

The lords of post metal for meBig smile
...I remember when this was released! Made some metal heads turn that's for damn sure.
Very unique and different take on metal, a take that's been copied so many times after it's insane.

Would have voted for Lather as it's my fave album "officially released" in '96, but since it was technically already "unofficially released" in '77 I decided to pass and go for my next fave...Devil Doll.

I can hugely appreciate what Neurosis have done with this album, almost single handedly launching a whole new genre, but I have to admit I find it rather dull at times and can never really get into it. For me the likes of Isis and Cult of Luna really took things in a more interesting direction.

Anyway, I voted for Pendragon here, but plenty of good albums all round.

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

My vote went to Quidam's debut, excellent Neo and it's not every year that a singer like Emila pops up.
