And me. The first band I loved was AC/DC. I still think Powerage is a great album. The first record I ever bought though was Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles. I was very small at the time |

I mostly didn't listen to or care about albums, just radio (pop & classic rock)---with one big exception:
Men at Work, Cargo. I think I was 12 or 13, I got Cargo for my birthday (because I liked Men at Work on the radio). I loved the album and listened to it every day (literally) for months without tiring. ... Not prog, but I believe it had some influence on my taste for prog later--its a little more sophisticated both musically and lyrically than lot of other pop music at the time and has some excellent flute/sax parts/solos like this one: Friends introduced me to Rush shortly after, and my Cargo spell was finally broken.

Before prog? Well there was prog...only I didn't really know.
As for artists found outside of the prog umbrella, there were: Michael Jackson The Grease Soundtrack Ravel's Bolero Kim Larsen/Gasolin Queen Scorpions Stevie Wonder Kiss Metallica Korn Type O Negative + a thousand different 60s and 70s rock bands like Cream, The Stones, Kinks, Neil Young, Bob Dylan etc etc.

I didn't really listen to ALBUMS pre-prog but some of the bands/artists I liked 'pre-prog' were Beatles, The Who, AC DC, Scorpions, UFO, Van Halen, Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden, Soundgarden, ABBA, Santana. At this point, I already liked Pink Floyd and APP without knowing they were prog/prog related. Also Heep.
And lastly, there was Ilayaraja, prolific enough to make just about anybody who is not Senmuth feel like they were slackers. I never got the impulse to seek out good Western music until I finally got a bit tired of listening to only his work.

When I was 15, I joined the mail-order "Record Club of America." That was 1970.
The first vinyl platters I bought were "In the Wake of Poseidon" by King Crimson; "Deja Vu" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; and "Led Zeppelin III." That pretty much got me on the right track! Before then, it was stuff like the Monkees.

First albums:
The Beatles (all the big ones), Steppenwolf, the Santana debut and John Barleycorn Must Die by Traffic were my first purchases.

Hmmm.... 10 albums? That's going to be hard. I listened to Boudewijn de Groot (Dutch folk singer) a lot, then got into Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Metallica and very soon after that discovered Rush, Marilion. It got better from there - after I passed aged 13 ;-)
