I'll go with the Sound of Music. I just like the story better.

Here are the dates of when The Sound Of Music was Number One in the UK album chart

5 June 1965 - 14 August 1965 (10 weeks)
16 October 1965 - 25 December 1965 (10 weeks)
19 February 1966 - 30 April 1966 (10 weeks)
25 June 1966 - 13 August 1966 (7 weeks)
1 October 1966 - 4 February 1967 (18 weeks)
25 March 1967 - 13 May 1967 (7 weeks)
20 May 1967 - 27 May 1967 (1 week)
3 June 1967 - 10 June 1967 (1 week)
18 November 1967 - 25 November 1967 (1 week)
2 December 1967 - 23 December 1967 (3 weeks)
27 January 1968 - 3 February 1968 ( 1 week)
23 November 1968 - 30 November 1968 (1 week)
Total: 70 weeks.

And here's when West Side Story was Number One:
23rd June-28th July 1962 (5 weeks)
1st-8th September 1962 (1 week)
15th-22nd September 1962 (1 week)
29th September-20th October 1962 (3 weeks)
17th-24th November 1962 (1 week)
15th-22nd December 1962 (1 week)
12th-19th January 1963 (1 week)
Total: 13 weeks.

I prefer the songs on The Sound Of Music.  Also it was the album that knocked Sgt Pepper off the top spot after five months, even though by that time it had already been around for well over two years.

I've never seen WSS nor do I know the music it contains. Sound Of Music though is shown every Christmas here in DK - numerous of times no less. Loved it when I was 5. Now I'm 7 and my tastes have changed.

It is a great story and a wonderful movie, no doubt.  In fact I probably like the story more, but I like the music from WSS a lot better.

funny Pat..   I love the movie WSS more..the dance choreography was INCREDIBLE.. and it had Rita Moreno's legs (christ almighty ...whew)LOL

but like the music of SoM more. It is Julie Andrews for god's sake.. what a voice she had...just hearing her voice brings makes me feel like a child again..

if i have to pick one of these two - then i'll go with The Sound of Music,
mainly for the scene where that big nun they called "The Bear" beat that Nazi's brains out with a baseball bat.

And you have to give credit for the song "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Gonorrhoea" for pioneering STD awareness in pop culture.

Hi,

Today, the discussion is rather ... different ... than yesterday. In Brazil, "West Side Story" was more important ... why? LEONARD BERNSTEIN. he was, by that time, already considered the very best American Conductor out there in the world.

In terms of dancing and artistic concept, i would say that WSS is much more important, since it brought along a new and more active style of dancing which was VERY new at the time in the world, and was not exactly seen everywhere. That this particular musical made it big is also because it DID have some movie stars, and on top of it, had a couple of songs that ended up making it to radio as hits ... which "SoM did not have!

SoM, is the better film, and not just because of the singing, which is very nice, but in many ways it gets buried in the annals of just another musical in the history of Hollywood! West Side Story doesn't even fit in that history of "musicals", since it is best known as a "dance" film, a lot more than a "musical".

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

West Side Story, because Alice Cooper adapted the Bernstein/Sondheim piece "Jets" on the School's Out album (1972):

Saw this in my first concert ever. I was twelve. Immediately afterward, I sold my ten-speed bike and bought a used guitar. God bless Alice.

I went with West Side Story because I liked the theme and mainly because of Natalie Wood.

Well, since I don't have any street credibility in the first place, I might just as well say: I'm a big SoM fan, saw it, like, 17 times. Most of the songs are really classic songs, very well composed too.
I like West Side Story too, good songs as well, but SoM, both movie and music, are definitely better IMHO.
