Thus accessible 1967 release by the good Captain  was musically directed by uber Blues guitarist Ry Cooder.

I'm not a huge Beefheart fan. But this is one of the few albums i like. Like you said it is certainly more accessible than some of his later work, but it has some of the signature grooves, vocals, and songwriting that just is infectious.

My first Beefheart record and I thank my lucky stars that I started here. One of his better ones.

Not one of my favorite Beefheart albums, but very good for its time. I like to think of the songs as belonging in one of three categories: straight blues, R&b balladry, and "the weird stuff". The album is pretty evenly divided between these 3 groups.

It must have sounded astonishing when it first came out, but it pales in comparison to what followed shortly thereafter. Even so, every good home should have a copy.
