Sun City Girls - Hatchet Rain (1987) first listen

Recorded in '83 and a cassette only release, making it virtually impossible to obtain in physical form unless you want to shell out big bucks. Sounds like their self-titled album from '84 with its wild avant free improv rock, and even features renditions from numbers found on that album. Sound quality is very lo-fi, even more so than most of their stuff that I've heard. What bugs me is the download seems to be low quality mp3 leaving the quiet moments filled with that bad digital binary-like ambience. I can almost hear the ones and zeros between tracks. I shouldn't complain though.

Huh, never heard of that one.  Too bad about the fidelity.  I like the early SCG stuff.

Earlier in the basement I had my 9YO daughter choose what LP she wanted to listen to.  She picked a couple of things she hadn't heard yet but was interested in -

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
and then
Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet.

Nice choices.  I think she's going to be okay.

According to Siouxsie herself, this is the finest album she put out and I'm not quite sure yet. While it's a far cry from the noisy but still colourful and cerebral music she began her career purveying, it's still a logical consequence of her going more and more into poppier and also psychedelic territory. There's also a somewhat disorienting and eerie element to the songwriting, kinda giving it an X-Files vibe really.

It does make me curious to hear what her and Budgie's side project The Creatures are like.

hah.. I'd take Ronnie Jame Dio.. ahem.. I mean Russell Allen... any day of the week over frickin Plant.

Great front man...no doubt.. part of the group mystique.. but there is a reason why he nearly got canned from the group. He is the weak link in the group as the singer.. and definitely sucks when compared to powerful and expressive vocalists like Allen.

you haven't...  you ain't been around much then.  Part of the overall listener fatigue many suffer with Zeppelin can be laid directly at Plant's feet.

odd question...it has nothing to do with high pitched or whatever if that is your point..  it simply is that Surkamp and to a lesser extent Geddy are great singers...  I've never read a credible critique of Plant being a great singer. He was a great front man. BIG difference man.
