Miles' effort could eat his competitor a Third helping.
Mainly because Third  is better structured, doesn't rely a lot on unnecessary amounts of tension, and is more ferocious than its competitor.

^More ferocious, yet also less tense?

What the hell does that mean?

^ Take it easy.

The Softs use ominous sounds of their instruments. As I've said before, they rely on tension (by that I meant dissonance), but not as much as Miles and his band do on Bitches Brew.

I guess everyone has a level of "dissonance", as you call it, that they can relate to. Although personally I wouldn't call Bitches Brew particularly so, nor that it is the dominant impression of the recording. I'm in agreement with Jazz Times: "Bitches Brew encompasses about every musical polarity of the late ’60s, whether jazz and rock, classical and African, improvised and notated music, live playing and postproduction editing. Its greatness lies in how it managed to bridge these polarities, including and transcending all the disparate ingredients into a completely new whole, and ended up with much more than the sum of its components. Bitches Brew explores a new, intangible musical universe, and any attempt to fully explain or define its concept and its music will inevitably diminish it to some degree."

Miles Davis, Bitches Brew.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Third, but only to make the votes level.

Me too. Never got over the feeling that BB is just aimless noodling around, no matter how hard I try.
Yep. Third is slow to start but great once it gets going. BB gets going then stops, then gets going again, then stops again...

Hi,

I would think that Soft Machine had heard Miles many times and enjoyed its "freedom", which probably helped define Soft Machine a bit ... although this is more of a thought in my head, than possible reality!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

50/50. I'll leave it that way for the moment out of respect for both.

That is probably true, actually. It's even said that Bitches Brew itself was the catalyst for the live shows and studio sessions that gave us Third.

Bumping thread, because I'm on a Miles Davis kick, and did a search Tongue

Bitches Brew all day for me, hands down.

Still didnt adquire the taste for Miles Davies.

I'am going to vote for "Third", but I'am open to new perspectives. Tongue

One of my favorite things to do late at night - especially in the summer - is listen to Bitches Brew, and look at surrealism/metaphysical art.

That combination is so winning for me.

Third is a phenomenal record but I don't really think this one's close. Bitches Brew is one of those pieces of music that just feels a bit like it reflects everything.
