Now Zappa's talking my language. I did not listen to this album until the late seventies when I became interested in Jazz Rock fusion.  This album blew me away until I heard Uncle Meat! What's your take on Hot Rats?

Love it, even if I think that it would be better and more well-balanced without Willie the Pimp. Just my opinion. Big smile

Willie the Pimp is the best song on the album. I'm not a Zappa fan, but this is one of the handful that i could listen to if forced.

Not a big fan of this one.  The short composed bits are great but the longer jam-based material is quite tedious, and I consider myself a pretty big Zappa fan.

Not bad but for sure the most overrated Zappa's album.

On the contrary, it's probably Zappa's best album from the period because, aside from Willie the Pimp, it contains no vocals and concentrates strictly on the music (along with one of the first uses of 16 track in studio); therefore, there is no sarcastic social commentary, no winks-and-nudges to California culture and no gross or self indulgent lyrical nonsense that, to me, tends to detract from and compartmentalize much of Zappa's music.

Sometimes Uncle Frank was too smarmy or eccentric for his own good. Here, we can just jam to Zappa without the extraneous material.

I do like Hot Rats. Lots of guitar. He was still developing as a player then. Not as many quirky odd metrical stuff that he would later do and that I love so much. Of course Jazz is not known for its interesting metrical phrasing anyway. Nice groove throughout.

Great album. A collection of excellent instrumentals (and Willie the pimp) that flow well together.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I can relate to this. The jamming is tedious and surprisingly it doesn't have a colorful background of sound to it. It has a definite "Ugly" sound which I believe is intentional on Zappa's part, but some of the repeated sections of it are boring. By the time Zappa recorded Joe's Garage, all jams were backed with an atmosphere in sound, created on keys, open chords on guitar, and dynamic bass and drum parts. Also the production was not as advanced sounding as Grand Wazoo. The snare drum was more cutting on Grand Wazoo than 200 Motels ...where it sounded like a drummer playing cardboard boxes and aside from the instrumental Avant-Garde pieces, it was frustrating to hear.

I had very high expectations for this album for my first listen. Let me down very much. It wasn't bad but it sure as heck wasn't 36 out of the 46,781 albums here. Personally, I prefer all TMOI albums and Lumpy Gravy before this album. Don't get the hype. If I'm missing something or I just need to get my ears checked for partial deafness, than please say what. I really want to like it.

I'm more in this camp. Peaches en Regalia and Little Umbrellas are my favourite tracks. The jammy stuff was done much better on Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo. As it stands I reckon it's a pleasant jazz rock album, but ol' Frank did much better.

Peaches really makes the album for me. For some reason I just love that piece. One of my all-time favorite Zappa ditties.

Any thoughts on the mix differences between the 1969 and the 1987 versions? I'm listening to both and there are some parts that I like in both versions.
