But if I had to choose something from the list I'd pick Buckley

I would too take any of Cohen's 70's material to these. 
I prefer him to Dylan as well.

Yep Al Stewart is one of my favourites as well and he has some strong prog connections having grown up in Wimbourne and having guitar lessons from a certain Mr Fripp plus the production work of Alan ParsonsSmile
 
I'm not a big sixties music fan so I don't actually own any album by any artist mentioned in the pollShocked
 
I do like a bit of Suzanne Vega as well as Al Stewart but that seems to be about as far as singer-songwriters and me go.
