Captain Beyond?! Come on people!

I would say The Mars Volta, but since we're talking radio i'd say Porcupine Tree would be a great place to look for Heavy Prog.

Maybe Way Out Of Here from them would work?

GREAT choices for modern prog, but I'm looking for 'classics' that establish where modern prog came from. Any ideas?

Thanks SO MUCH Mickey & Raff! You've given me a tremendous start. Now I have to listen to all of those samples you sent me (on my rural ultra-slow internet).

I know it's practically cliche, but if you're looking from where a lot of the influences came from I'm going to have to say it is pretty hard to reject Rush.

How about Can-Utility for symphonic? Probably as good a quick summary as there is.

Clap I agree, this is an amazing song!  I just saw the Canadian band The Musical Box perform this live, it was excellent!

I also believe that Captain Beyond's first LP is a fine example of heavy progressive rock, especially the "Dancing Madly Backwards" suite.

My own recommendation for Jazz Rock Fusion is Brand X's fantastic "Deadly Nightshade," and I prefer Amon Duul II's "Wolf City" for Krautrock.

You didn't read the OP carefully. See what BrufordFreak wrote:

Right now I'm looking for suggestions for individual songs from the 60s/70s that epitomize each of the sub-genres. For example, what one song do you think best represents the Canterbury Scene; which one song best represents Krautrock; which one song in your opinion is the best example from Prog Folk to help educate a sometimes ignorant public, etc. My intention is to use one individual song to help prep the listener for the modern music from that sub-genre that I am excited to share with them.(...)

There wasn't Prog Metal in that classic era 60/70s prog LOL
Also, he didnt ask that we post the lists of our favourite songs by the bands from different genres, he asked that we suggest to him the songs that will represent each of PA genres at its best in our opinion.

and you're picking on me because you're holding a grudge for yesterday right?

and you say One of the Vine by Genesis is neo-prog?

now if the OP told me I screwed up, I would understand, as for yourself...

I just tried to help you... If I didn't tell you this, very friendly actually, maybe you gonna start to list post-rock bands.
Yea, One For The Vine is a great example for late 70s neo prog style. But, maybe Squonk is even better example of neo; what you think, Christi?

well, don't help then.
I made a new post.

No, you cannot mention Genesis as neo-prog, whatever song you may mention.

Of course I can. No one time I read on this Forum that ATotT and W&W are neo prog albums, and I agree. Btw, what about Inside And Out? A perfect Neo song indeed.

A lot of people (here on PA and elsewhere) consider Genesis' A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering as the main inspiration for the original Neo Prog bands, so Svetonio does have a point. Regarding prog metal, obviously the subgenre as we know it now did not exist in the Seventies, but some songs by iconic metal bands might be considered as examples of proto-progressive metal. Case in point: Judas Priest's "Victim of Changes" and "Beyond the Realms of Death".
