The poll question is pretty straightforward. I just find this an interesting side by side.
Genesis Archive - Dusk Genesis Trespass - Dusk They're the same in so many ways, but the mood is slightly yet significantly different. How do you think the archive version would blend in with the rest of trespass? As a matter of fact, as I think about it, maybe I'll test it out for myself. A slightly archive Trespass easily done. |

I had never heard the Archive version before this, so thank you for that! But, I'm partial to the Trespass version because it is one of my all-time favorite Genesis songs. But I did like hearing its earlier form! Again, thanks!

^Of course I haven't voted yet, but my opinion is probably not much different from yours. There was, however, always that element of mystery how Genesis got to Trespass from where they were previously, and this one of the few places where we get a direct before and after comparison. So very intriguing. Happy to have brought this to your attention.

I like the studio version. Interesting demo but the original feels so much more pastoral.

I just listened to side 2 of Trespass substituting the Archive version of Dusk. It doesn't blend at all. The mood is all joltingly wrong, especially the soprano "woo hoo" part does not belong. That clicking percussion that runs through much of it never bothered me before, but seems very much of an intrusion when inserted into the album. This is pretty much what I suspected, but it was an interesting experience testing it out.

Thanks for posting the Archive version - I never heard that before.
Sure it's very pleasing on the ears, closer to the debut in style, but creeping toward Trespass. I would still go for the Trespass version, if only for the fact I am so used to it. And the flute solo is more dramatic. It's a wonderfully mysterious track, a bit of a 'quiet achiever', but very charming and pastoral. I wish the final piece was of longer duration. Trespass is a very special album indeed. |

I would go for the Archives version, except I can't understand why the annoying metronome is there! If anyone is wondering about the transition from the first album to Trespass, then read 'Chapter and Verse'. It has much to do with Phillips and Rutherford jamming in the kitchen with 12-string guitars and the winter in the cottage.

thanks for posting this version! I got a lot of enjoyment listening to that. But obviously I like the Trespass version better; it's a lot more mysterious!
