I have deliberately not suggested a sub genre in the initial topic title because I haven't as yet heard the tracks on "Tales From The Silent Ocean" in full - but there is just a hint that there might be enough in this album to interest the Symphonic boys...All will be revealed in the fullness of time... Tongue

Anyway, from http://www.progrock.co.uk/acatalog/Steve_Hughes.html (where you can buy the CD for £9.99 plus postage):

"Debut solo album from Steve Hughes featuring guests, SEAN FILKINS, J.C STRAND & EZZY ANYA among others. The album took over a year to make and is Steve's first solo adventure. Steve has played most instruments and produced the album himself with the help of his old friend from school, J.C Strand who takes care of guitar duties. Steve has a long history as a drummer of prog rock/fusion and jazz and has been a busy playing for many bands over the years.

He was the former drummer in Big Big Train for 16 years (1991-2007), was the stand-in drummer for Kino (2004) and spent four years touring and recording with The Enid (1994-1998) as well as stints with countless other bands over the last 20 years including Nick May's Whimwise, Meretto, The Serious Hat Band, Pancracker, and Rush tribute band 'The Spirit of Rush' where he played with fellow band mate, vocalist Dec Burke (Darwin's Radio, Frost, solo). Steve decided it was about time he showed the world that he could do more than just beating of the skins...

The album has a varied and wide range of influences from Rush, Toto, Marillion, The Enid, Prefab Sprout, Tears For Fears and Scritti Politti. The album concept is mainly based around a slightly eccentric manic depressive writer/journalist who succumbs to mental illness, his unorthodox style and questioning the truth causing his marriage break up and a life alone wandering the streets until he finds peace by the coast. Other themes intermingle, related to relationship failures.

The CD has been mastered by Simon Hanhart who has previously worked with Arena, Asia, Kino, Marillion, Bryan Adams, and Elton John, to name just a few."

Edit: Topic title changed to include the words 'Symphonic Prog', after hearing the full album. Track times added. Smile

This really is an excellent debut album, and I have a strong feeling that it will be appearing in A LOT of top ten lists come the end of the year.  Embarrassed

Not 100% sure, but in the doubt I accept.

I vote YES but allow Crossover to check him first

Almost a week now, and still no PA tab on progfreak: http://progfreak.com/Steve-Hughes-162495.html. Music from the album is being played on a number of prog podcasts, with extremely positive comments too...I take it for granted that the Crossover team were notified in their team thread last week, so maybe someone with access to the CZ could give them a gentle reminder? I'd hate this to fall down a crack... Embarrassed

Take it easy Yam. It's only been a week and it's the Easter holidays. Add to that the xover guys have A LOT on their plate as it is. Patience my good man.

They weren't alerted at the time, but I'll drop them a note.

Didn't alerted them because we have decided that if one member has doubts and the other three vote yes, we usually change our vote, unlesss it's a NO

Now that Anton has also sent them to Xover, well,  it's time to alert the team.

Thank you

Iván

Thanks guys. It'll be great to get Steve onto PA...whatever sub he ends up in. So far we have one 'move' vote in the Crossover chart, so the outcome is still very much up in the air.

The fat lady hasn't sung HT.

If not accepted in Crossover, we will most likely add them.

And it's looking increasingly likely that Crossover will be passing on this one...Two 'move' votes now, with two team members still to vote. The fat lady's gig is certainly looking somewhat doubtful just at the moment...Watching with interest...Should be a resolution pretty soon now. Smile

We will see, I get a very strong Neo vibe from these guys and Evolver was torn between Neo and Ecclectic.  I've got to say this, this is one of my favorite new artists that I've heard this year.  I really like it.

Thanks Tom. Thumbs Up Gosh, the plot certainly thickens doesn't it...Now we've got Neo and Eclectic in the hat too!! I'd be surprised to see this get the nod in Eclectic to be honest, and I'd not really thought about Neo - though I guess Neo and Symphonic aren't exactly a million miles away from each other. Be interesting to get Thomas and Roger's views on the album when they've voted...and of course any further thoughts from Iván now that Neo and Eclectic have been mentioned. And yeah - this is one of the best new releases I've heard this year so far too. Smile

Edit: Oh - I see that an evaluation in Neo has already started...with an immediate 'yes' vote! Let's see what Apostolis and Matti make of it... Embarrassed

Neo can be pretty quick sometimes.  Cleared with three yes votes.
