Topic: Favorite Mellotron sound? (and post an example!) Posted: March 27 2015 at 04:24 |
I've always fancied the choir. Even if it's a song that doesn't particular click, as soon as that Mellotron comes out, I start totally freaking out (in a good way lol).
The Strawbs use it masterfully in the outro to Autumn. Very nice followup to the closing vocals.

And then of course, there's the haunting choir from Radiohead's Exit Music. Gives me chills every time.

On a lesser note, I've never really fancied the brass section or the flutes. The former is almost never used, although I know King Crimson has done it a couple times, and it always gives me a very uneasy feeling (not the good kind). And as someone who used to play the flute, perhaps that's why I find the Mellotron flute very dull (sorry Strawberry Fields Forever). I find that the extra effort goes a long way whether you're as good as Ian Anderson, or you just threw it in to add to the overall sound a la Peter Gabriel.

I see this is going to be another YouTube thread. Please post links instead of embedded vids

Done :) This is better too since the embedded vids wouldn't directly link to the Mellotron parts I was trying to show.
And Svetonio, that was very surreal use of the Mellotron. Always good to hear bands still using it, even in the 2010s.

Can't post any samples (dumb-ass iPod user here.....), but, as many distinctive sounds there are, the 'Choir' setting always gets my 'man-tits' dangling (so to speak). Tony Banks' use at the end of Entangled (Trick Of The Tail) is some of the most incredible build-ups EVER.

Steven Wilson wrote a song about a mellotron scratching, has anyone ever actually heard one do that?

Probably in my top 3 favorite prog moments. I couldn't of imagined how he thought of this wonderful combo. Even a lot of my non-prog friends are amazed by the outro when they hear Entangled.
And yeah about PT, I never understood what a Mellotron scratch is lol

No thought required: the trio of 'trons playing together on ANEKDOTEN's 2005 live album, Waking the Dead (Live in Japan 2005). Brilliant throughout! One of my Top 5 favorite live albums of all-time.

The end of Entangled is a combination of ARP and Mellotron, but it's the first thing that came to mind. Now I have to go listen to that whole album. Thanks.

Choir. Flutes close second. Love the uses on Changes by The Zombies in particular. For choir, She Came Shining is a must. Beautiful choir introduction. But all the samples are good. Love the thing.
