A heart attack, at his home in Hawick, UK. March 26th, 2015

From the press:

airport Convention‘s Simon Nicol told Uncut, “Another light has gone out. John made a uniquely important contribution to guitar music and I first became aware of his playing when I picked up the guitar in my early teens. John influenced more people than he ever knew and he knew a lot of people. He was much-loved and will be much-missed.”

Meanwhile, online David Crosby hailed him as “a great musician”.

Other friends and fans including Gordon GiltrapRiley WalkerCerys MatthewsAndy Votel and Lauren Laverne also offered their condolences.

Fantastic album, and one that should be in everybody's collection. RIP John.

We're talking about the 1960's and 1970's ... and that means that many more will go away and it is up to us to keep the light going!

Not to mention that even some of us will also go away sooner or later!

Renbourne was an inspiration to many guitar players across the genres, myself included.  I listened to my favorite album of his in memorium, The Hermit.  Clap

This was supposed to follow the clap: Cry.  Meaning I applaud his contributions and mourn his passing.

Very sad. I saw him play a couple of times, both wonderful.
Spinning the first Pentangle album now - a perfect gem.

It feels like everytime I open this site, another great musician passes away. This year just keeps getting worse.

Saw John and Bert do a very intimate gig in Devon in the early 80's- fantastic, one of the best gigs ever- magical guitar playing, a real rapport between the two, tightness and fluidity, a very english almost mediaeval style with loose, rolling jazz flavours.. absolute magic. RIP a true genius.

John Renbourn - one of the great acoustic guitarists of a generation...better make that 2 generations i.e. 1965- 1990 and 1990-2015.

He played some extremely intricate pieces but it was like watching someone shell peas.

His greatest piece of musicianship IMHO is

The Nine Maidens: Clarsach / The Nine Maidens / The Fiddler

Find it, listen to it and shake your head in wonder.

Here's to a musical genius that was John Renbourn.

Very sad news. I was lucky enough to see Pentangle live some years back and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.
