I offer you five here. Five is all you get. I did not offer an "other" category, because if you say Jon Anderson or Neil Peart, I'll have to punch you in the nose. Sorry, but I am trying to have a serious poll here. LOL

I had to actually look up the Geoff Mann reference to figure out who the hell you were talking about. LOL

Of these choices, I voted for Ian Anderson for his 70s-80s output alone. I also quite like his solo album Rupi's Dance.

Gabriel's never really impressed me as a lyricist.

Yes,  I'm a big Ian fan myself. The lyrics of Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play are irreverent and clever, and I do love it when he resorts to skating along the thin ice of obscenity, like in "Pig-me and the Whore" and "Hunting Girl". But it is his descriptive ability, of painting a scene with words, such as on "Velvet Green", "Heavy Horses" or "Flying Dutchman", where he really excels.

I'm going for Gabriel by a smidgeon over Anderson.

I'd risk a punch in the nose by stating that Peart is lacking in this list of talented lyricists, just like Fish. Jon Anderson is another story: some of his lyrics remind my of a Christmas letter written by my aunt who lives in California, back in 2001. This letter was full of misspellings, and the worst thing was the appearance of unintended other words that made no sense at all in the context of that message. It took me three days to decipher this letter ConfusedOuchWacko. I regard most of Jon Anderson's lyrics as poppycock.

Of the ones mentioned, I vote for Peter Hammill, but this is a close call.

I'm still playing catch up with VDGG and Hammill so I'm not going to vote for him ( maybe in 5 years Smile)

I voted for Gabriel for Carpet Crawlers and Solsbury Hill if nothing else. Waters is close and has also written some memorable lyrics. Anderson I like but I think the substance of his lyrics is better than the form.

Sinfield is more a poet than a lyricist to me although perhaps there is not a massive difference in prog.

Peter Hammill is the greatest poet of 70s prog.
