Never heard of him. Dorothy Hamill was a great skater, though.

I think he's fantastic, especially on Least We Can Do... and Godbluff.
He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball!

With a band he's fantastic. I saw him do a solo act once and it didn't work. A voice like that needs a lot of sound to back it up. Just a piano or lone guitar isn't enough.

Well, I missed his "solo act" and hate myself for it.

I like his style very much.  Very dramatic, story teller singing.  "( On Tuesdays She Used To Do ) Yoga" is a good example.  I wonder if David Bowie was influenced by Peter's singing.

What songs did he play in that concert you saw? I think he could pull a solo show off, but it depends on what he's trying to aim for. I've heard some samples from his solo album The Future Now (which I need to get) and if he tried stuff like that or one of the calmer VDGG songs, I think he could do fine.

Come to think of it, I think there was an interview where John "Johnny Rotten" Lydon had the same theory.

Back in June '97, I was lucky enough to catch 2 consecutive solo gigs he performed in Melbourne - I was blown out !! Got to talk with him on both nights (gloat, gloat) and thought he did an amazing job. I could listen to him all day, because the 'bare-bones' of his unique compositions are generally built-up from his guitar, piano, melodies, vocals, and then enhanced by other instrument arrangements.
Something like 'My Room', didn't quite have the same impact alone as it does with a band, but something like 'A Way Out' worked perfectly.
Such a great musician/singer, one I hold in extremely high esteem. Forever.

Really like VDGG music.....never thought Hammill was much of a true singer but then many rock vocalists can't sing all that well. For me it seems at times he's off  key, just can't hit the notes , and doesn't carry the melody line very well. On the other hand I like his lyrics and the emotion he puts into his vocals.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

I haven't got it yet.  Still find him to be abrasive.

Interestingly enough, I had prior discussions here on PA discussing Rob Halford's similarities and I am a big Judas Priest/Rob Halford fan and found this comparison intriguing.  I am also a big fan of Matthew Parmenter and Discipline, who are clearly influenced by Peter Hammill and VDGG.

I'm going to throw in my thoughts on one of my favorite singers.

He is abrasive. Regardless if you listen to him for 20 years or 20 minutes, the rawness he brings to singing will be there. It doesn't become clean or smooth after you hear it. The rawness is the appeal though. That's why i love Gabriel so much more as a vocalist than Colins. Phil was such a clean, technical voice that i just preferred the edge that Gabriel had with his vocals. It's similar to the appeal of punk, lo-fi, etc. If you dislike singers that aren't meticulously singing note for note and trying to sound as flawless as possible, then sure, singers like Hammill will probably not appeal to you - though maybe you'll acquire the taste and appreciation for a talent like that.

When i listen to vocalist, mainly because of my lack of education pertaining to it, but i NEVER even think of the notes, key, and whatnot. To me, emotion conveyed, the melody/cadence, and whatnot interest me. Sure when i listen to Cedric from The Mars Volta when i anticipate a high note or shrill has can do - i love it, but i'm not thinking to myself "Hey was that a proper d#?" "How does it fit into the key". I just think that it is unnecessary.

To each their own of course though. I'm sure that is what gives Symphonic music so much pull - is its listeners just picking apart the music.

Arrow wouldn't be one of my favorite VdGG songs if it had Greg Lake or that guy in Dream Theater trying to hit everything and smooth out the vocals. No, it is Hammill's shredded vocals and heart-wrenching ache that the vocals inherently have that gives the song so much power.

So in conclusion:

Hammill is amazing.
Crushed like a rose in the riverflow.

I'd love to see this poll with Dagmar Krause.  Tongue

Hammill is very stylized, so I can see how one could be turned off.  I agree that he's not the best technically, but his vocals are perfect for the kind of music VdGG wrote.
